Imber evacuation anniversary marked with service
1:21pm Sunday 6th October 2013 in News
A special service marking the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Imber village was staged yesterday as part of the Westbury Music and Arts Festival.
The army took over Imber, on the edge of Salisbury Plain, in 1943 to use the area for D-Day training, forcing residents to move out, never to return.
It has been used by the military ever since, with access granted to the public by the Ministry of Defenceon a number of occasions a year.
The service, at Edington Priory Church, including performances from the Westbury Choral Society, was officiated by the Rev Mark Jones.
Westbury Music and Arts Festival continues until Sunday, October 13.
