More than 130 pupils of Queens Crescent School, Chippenham, had fun joining in the Big Pedal inter-school competition, which aims to get more children active by cycling and scooting to school.

The event was launched in 2009 by transport charity Sustrans to encourage parents to leave their car at home for the school run, the reward being a Bike-it breakfast.

PE leader Sarah Barker said: “The children always look forward to a Bike It breakfast and they were especially excited this time because it was pancake day as well.

“The turn-out was fantastic with positive comments from all the children and parents who came along.

“This year, without Connecting Wiltshire and Sustrans, we wouldn’t have been able to have such a wide range of food on offer, something which everyone is incredibly thankful for.”

Marjory Hatvany, project officer for personalised travel planning in schools, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people all celebrating pancake day by cycling or scooting to school.”
