A tribute has been paid to popular care worker Harriet Gormley, 26, who died in an accident on the A4 near Silbury Hill on Monday.

Miss Gormley, of Cotswold Close, Melksham, was a passenger in a red Austin Mini that crashed on the A4 near Silbury Hill just after 3.15pm.

The driver is believed to have lost control as he negotiated the brow of a hill and a series of bends. At the time of the accident there was torrential rain.

The Mini span 90 degrees in the road, crossing the westbound carriageway, the passenger side hitting the front of a silver Audi A4 which was parked in an adjacent lay-by.

The force of the collision pushed the Audi back into a red Hyundai i20 which was parked behind it.

A rapid response paramedic, two ambulances, a basics doctor and Wiltshire Air Ambulance, which landed in a field opposite Silbury Hill, were called but Ms Gormley died at the scene.

The driver of the Mini suffered head injuries. He was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon for treatment.

A spokesman for Somerset Care in Melksham, where she worked as a support and care worker, said: “We are obviously shocked and very sad to hear of Harriet’s death.

“Although she had only worked for Somerset Care for a few months she was a popular and hard-working member of staff, and our thoughts are with her partner and family.”

Police closed the A4 between West Kennet and the Beckhampton for five hours.

Wiltshire Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or may have seen the red Mini beforehand.

Anyone with information can contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
