PATIENCE was a virtue for Warminster as they bided their time to enable Neil Dredge to shoot down high-flying Rockhampton last weekend.

Tom Davie’s side got back to winning ways with a two-wicket triumph at Sambourne Road, thanks in no small part to number eight Dredge’s stunning unbeaten knock of 91 from just 36 deliveries.

Captain Davie paid tribute to the show-stopping efforts of the match winner and would be delighted to see his side repeat their measured approach in future outings.

“We restricted them to what we thought was a par score on a flat wicket at Warminster but then got off to a terrible start,” said Davie.

“What we had to realise is that 50 overs is a long time. Myself and Rory (Cullinan) steadied the ship and took some time out of the game, which is exactly what we needed.

“We knew that we’d need something special from down the order and that’s exactly what we got.

“That innings was well worth a watch and I’ve never seen anything like it in all my time playing at Warminster.

“It was a fantastic knock and it meant that we pulled off an upset, which is great.”

Rockhampton, who were top of the table going in to Saturday’s clash, opted to bat first after winning the toss.

Warminster claimed their opponents’ first two wickets for 52 runs but Matt Tyler (92) and Guy Brothwood (90) found their range as the visitors posted 239-4.

Davie’s men found themselves under some early pressure as their first three wickets fell for just 16 but the Warminster skipper (59) and Rory Cullinan (31) got the hosts back on track.

Dredge then set about racking up his total in double-time, whacking nine sixes and five fours in the process.

Nick Hembury also chipped in with 21 and despite Rockhampton’s William Cartlidge, Dave McCabe and Brothwood all claiming two wickets apiece, Warminster reached 240-8 early in the penultimate over.

Westbury remain in relegation danger after they were edged out by one wicket at Gloucester City Winget.

Having elected to bat, Westbury laboured to 180 all out in under 42 overs, Simon Rose scoring 44 and skipper Tom Cullen 29.

The visitors made early inroads into the home side’s order, Rose taking 4-33 and Aditya Rai 2-33, but the unbeaten 69 of Craig Collinson helped nudge Winget across the finishing line.
