Wainwright society sets new plans

Members of the newly-formed Wainwright Society have been given an insight into the first activities for 2003.

A walk has been planned for spring, led by Mark Richards, who has followed in Wainwright's footsteps as a sketchbook artist, and a lecture will be given in the autumn by Wainwright's biographer, Hunter Davies.

The activities have been put together by the six committee members, from suggestions which came from enthusiasts at the meeting in Ambleside in November. The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of when Alfred Wainwright penned his first page of what was to become a series of seven guidebooks on fell walking in the Lake District.

The multitude of proposals put forward at the meeting are to be progressed to make a complete programme of events, which is expected to bring devotees from near and far. As well as the 100 enthusiasts who attended the meeting in Ambleside, a further 200 people have expressed an interest in the society.

Membership details and an application form can be obtained from Morag Clement, the Membership Secretary, at Kendal Museum, Station Road, Kendal, LA9 6BT, or by e-mail at Membership@Wainwright. org.uk.
