Scrappy days are here at Lacock
A children's charity is offering youngsters a scraptastic way to get creative over the summer, by launching its latest series of holiday workshops. Wiltshire Scrapstore, in Bowden Hill, Lacock, is a resource centre, established in 1999, which aims to make low-cost resources available to children and promote learning through creativity. To start the summer art workshops – which will run on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 10.30am and noon – staff welcomed Scrapstore patron and children’s author Neil Griffiths. He gave a reading of his new book, Animal Antics, during the first session, on Wednesday and in honour of the Olympic-themed animal book, treasure hunts will be taking place during the store’s workshop events. The aim of the sessions is to allow children to let their imaginations run wild, using tubes, buttons, fabric and other materials donated to the Scrapstore. Glynis Cosgrave,Wiltshire Scrapstore’s assistant director, said: “We are really looking forward to holding our summer workshops, as we have more materials than ever before for children to get creative with.” Last year the Scrapstore was struck with a huge blow when it lost £250,000 in funding as Wiltshire Council pulled the plug on a programme it had run with the Scrapstore to visit children’s centres and work one-on-one with youngsters. But the centre has come back strongly by raising funds through its store, Barty’s Arts and Crafts, in West Street, Lacock, as well as its website. It has recently launched a playpod scheme for primary schools in Wiltshire. Mrs Cosgrave said: “The playpods are external buildings which are made to measure for the school’s needs and go in their playgrounds for lunchtime play. “We are really pleased with how things are going at the minute and we are moving forward well.” The Scrapstore, which has pods at Mead Primary School, in Trowbridge, and Wansdyke Primary School, in Devizes, sends mentors to the playpods and replenishes supplies every six weeks. The charity currently has about 60 volunteers, but Mrs Cosgrave said that she would be happy to hear from more people who would like to lend a hand.
