  • Lacock garden centre takes trip back to the 1940s

Whitehall Garden Centre at Lacock will turn back time this weekend when its popular Dig for Victory 1940s event returns. A spokesman for the centre said: “There has been some confusion over this year’s Dig For Victory because a new event has started in the village, but it’s business as usual at the centre and our event, now in its sixth year, promises to be bigger and better than ever. “We have a huge marquee, so the weather won’t affect us, and we have a full weekend of fun and entertainment for the whole family – and best of all, it’s free.” The grounds of the centre will be filled with the sights and sounds of the 1940s tomorrow (Saturday) and on Sunday. The huge Home Front Marquee will be transformed into a 1940s high street for an indoor street party with music, dancing and entertainment. Visitors, who can wear 1940s costume if they wish, can browse the vintage shop displays, enjoy the Lyons’ Tea Rooms, visit the fire station and meet period characters. Entertainment, courtesy of the Blitz Buddies, will include fashion shows, dancing lessons and displays. Outside the marquee, enthusiasts can see a range of military and civilian vehicles of the era, and displays of home front and military life. A highlight will be a flyover by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team who, flight conditions permitting, will appear on both days with a Lancaster bomber and a Spitfire or Hurricane. Entry is free. For more details, visit www.dig-for-victory.com read more

  • Lacock Abbey buzzes for honey day

Hundreds of visitors enjoyed a sunny day at Lacock Abbey learning about bees and beekeeping. The popular annual bee and honey day, organised by Melksham and District Beekeeping Association, returned to the Botanic Gardens of the abbey on Sunday. Ann Cox, a gardener at the abbey and a member of the association, said: “It was a great day. I think we get a lot of people who come back again and again because they enjoy it so much. “We had 1,200 people there over the day, which is fantastic, and we were fortunate with the weather. “There was a horrendous thunderstorm to start with, but then it turned into a really lovely day.” Among the attractions was an observation hive, where visitors could see bees behind glass, and an empty hive so people could see the intricacy of the real thing. There was also mead and honey tasting, a honey hoopla where contestants could win a jar of honey, and activities for children including beeswax candle rolling. Around 50 of the association’s 120 members helped perform demonstrations and answer questions about the art of beekeeping. Ms Cox said: “We sold out of honey, which was really excellent. “We had lots of people asking really good questions who were curious about bees and looking after them.” The next meeting of the association is on September 24 at Broughton Gifford Village Hall. All are welcome to attend. read more
