Pigeon feeder fined £80

FEEDING the birds will cost more than Mary Poppins' tuppence a bag after a Trowbridge woman was fined £80 for throwing down excessive amounts of bread.

West Wiltshire District Council revealed it had issued a fixed penalty notice after a council officer witnessed the unnamed woman throwing large quantities of bread and other food for the birds in the town centre.

It is the first fine to be handed out in the town for this offence in a bid to reduce the pigeon flock in Trowbridge.

Town councillor Tom James said: "It's about time something is done. The town council has been requesting the district council to do something for years.

"At the end of the day people should be prosecuted. The damage the pigeons are causing is horrendous." The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 extended the use of fixed penalty notices to deal with issues like fly-posting, graffiti, abandoning vehicles and littering.

The notice against the woman was issued on October 18 but was not paid until last week. The woman had been summonsed to appear before Chippenham magistrates but the case did not reach court.

Over the past 12 months the district council has issued 11 fixed penalty notices.

John Carter, environmental health manager, said: "Council officers only agreed to accept payment of the fixed penalty after meeting the offender and warning her about her future conduct."

Oh, for gawd's WTF is wrong with naming her? - one can find out quite simply - it's a public record.

And FFS!

I want this to apply to $peed cameras!!

"Council officers only agreed to accept payment of the fixed penalty after meeting the offender and warning her about her future conduct."

Didn't realise they were being ahem... processed - I'll have tocheck that out - I've no problem eating pigeons - or rabbits for that matter - remember a time when dozens of rabbits used to hang outside Trowbridge butchers shops - better than mixy-ing them anyday.

Maybe they could train the pigeons to go and s1t on that microscopic statue of 'Disgusted of Westbury' that they'll hide away well out of the Market Place if anyone could find it.

WWDC would probably have given the same woman a medal if she had thrown bread down in Melksham.

Feral pigeons can carry Chiamdiosis and Psittacosis, diseases similar to influenza and pneumonia, and also they damage the fabric of buildings. The bulk of the food they eat in towns is made up of the discarded burgers, chips and general food waste that some people insist on eating whilst wandering, and then dump in the street. Each pigeon can eat 64 pounds of food per year! 18 million feral pigeons in this country means a lot of droppings on the buildings and streets.

Wiltshireflag Man is 100% right of course, in all seriousness we would be far better off without such high numbers of pigeons in town centres.

Pigeons will long survive here, fed by the continuous litter of all people, but mostly the English.

Wiltshireflagman is correct. Pigeons carry more diseases than rats!
And Bob, I do get out. I was in Wiltshire last week-end, including Trowbridge. I apologise for my sense of humour.

Maybe the council could employ the ex-bowyers workers to chase the pigeons on a rotating shift patterns. Thus stopping them from landing.

Sometimes it may be wise not to mention someones name for many reasons.

A friend and I asked that one of the "pidgeon" feeders be given another chance on this occasion as we did when she was suspended from her job as she was seen by security men and was on cctv for the same thing. The reason we managed to get her job back was because we told the company and still have the emails that they themself could not reasonably sack her as they has large amounts of food exposed wich were feeding rats etc'.... Sadly instead of the woman realising we had helped her she got confused and thought we were against her. She told us she would kill herself and we would have been very upset to have seen that happen. Her mother was also a kind woman. It is good this article mentions the reason she was fined was because an officer reported her as we fear we would also wrongly get the blame again. We have never caused her any trouble and in fact have done all we can to make her understand the implications and to get her another chance.

We believe totally that racism is wrong and of course the english should also be stopped from causing rats etc'.... The woman worked hard for many years and has a very nice side to her in that she helped many charities in this country and abroad and a large number of her family. I have seen her lifting snails off the pavement so they wont be stepped on and have seen a very kind side to her. Her husband, son and daughter are nice people and have I believe also tried to explain things to her.

The article is a sensitive issue and on this occasion I applaud the paper for not mentioning the name of the woman. and I hope this will not be the end of the situation. God bless all involved.

I just wanted to add I meant to write I hope this will NOW be the end of the situation although I do hope it will not be the end of the situation in that I hope somewhere to feed birds can be found where rats cant get the food and where they are away from public buildings etc..... I myself could not shoot a bird and wish they could survive but maybe in woods etc;.... Its such a difficult situation and I believe Mar makes some good points in a quote on here as do others.

There are pellets (can't remember what they are called now - pink things) that act very simlar to LSD in Humans. It destroys the Pigeons ability to find its way back to its feeding spot so it wanders off elsewhere. This might be worth trying and if it fails we can always flog the remaining pellets to Trowbridge Chavs.

Thank you Tony for your comments about someone I know. Unfortunately I dont have time to write a thousand words on this important subject because I dont care what sarcastic comments may be written either.

As for councillors' expenses what a pittance that is in the grand scale of things and they are no consolation for the ---- written by ---- who I wish would --- -------. How nice of you not to shut up.

Fine thanks, although somewhat over worked, underpaid and underestimated.
