Almshouse History & Charity

Churches and chapels were main providers in the town for poorer members of their congregations. Philanthropists who personally founded almshouse relied on the rental income from the land and property to support the buildings and residents. The aim was to provide comfortable and convenient accommodation in a setting which allowed residents to come and go as they pleased.

Almshouses today are organized as charitable trusts, owned by and registered with the Charity Commission and mostly proved only housing for beneficiaries. The weekly charges on the homes are not for profit.
