Have you reached a career crossroads?

According to statistics, if you are contemplating a change of job, now is the time to do it with the number of job vacancies and average earnings on the increase.

However, whether you are considering a career move or a career change, the decision to leave the known for the unknown can still be a little daunting.

Regardless of the reason, once you have decided it's time to leave for pastures new, take some time to prepare for your next move, do not jump in feet first without having a plan. Consider what skills you have amassed over the years, where you think your knowledge could best be utilised in the market and what you feel you would get the most enjoyment out of, then research the major employers in that sector who could offer you what you are looking for. Depending on what drives you, search for the companies that have the better promotion opportunities, working environments, pay schemes or that are simply closer to home.

Think about where you want to be long-term. What appeals to you more, the thought of having a high-powered job with great responsibility or a job that offers flexibility with no weekend or late night requirements so as not to interfere with the social calendar'? These types of questions must be considered in order to find the job that best suites your needs.

Once you have acknowledged what your interests are, how your skills could be applied and the type of companies that you would like to work for, take the time to ask those already working for the companies for some insider knowledge that could help you to make your final decision.

Ask questions such as:

  • How did you get the job?

  • Do you enjoy working for this company?

  • What kind of person is more successful in this job?

  • What might give me the edge over other candidates?

Once you have decided that a particular path is for you, make sure that you have an up to date CV, show your interest and get your name known.

For help with entering your chosen career, either through initial temporary work or long-term permanent employment, talk to your local recruitment agency who will be able to offer support and advice for taking those vital first steps.
