THE George and Dragon in Rowde is a 16th century coaching Inn with Tudor beams, which is now open every Monday.

Its warm and cosy rooms have wooden floors, large open fireplaces and antique rugs, candlelit tables and crisp white linen for the tables.

The restaurant specialises in seafood delivered daily from St Mawes in Cornwall and there is a full a la carte menu offering meat and game dishes using locally sourced produce.

Owners Phil and Michelle Hale and Christopher Day have decided to open every Monday for both lunch and dinner because of the demand from customers.

For 30 years no food was served at the pub but that has now changed.

Mr Day said: "We were turning around 10 or 15 people away every Monday and which was a bit silly so we just decided to open and take advantage of the demand.

"We've been open for six weeks on Mondays and it's been very popular.

"We have a set lunch menu which is two courses for £13 or three courses for £15.50."

Mr Day and Mr Hale went to primary school together and the three have been friends for many years.

They decided to move to the countryside and take advantage of their catering experience by running a pub and restaurant.

Mr Day said: "Phil's mother makes fresh bread every Monday and we also make our own ice cream. We're normally booked up very quickly so I would urge customers to ring and book in advance."

In 2007 the George and Dragon was awarded a second Rosette by the AA for its restaurant. The three recently renovated bedrooms were also awarded 4 Stars by the AA.
