My Wiltshire Life - Ellen Scudamore

11:15am Thursday 29th March 2007

ELLEN Scudamore, 39, is a volunteer and charity fundraiser. Born and brought up in west Wiltshire, she has lived in the district most of her life.

For a number of years Miss Scudamore has been involved with Grassacres Hall in Westbury, which is used by various community groups and as a day centre for the elderly. She is also a volunteer at a Westbury Baptist Church youth group, helps out at the Barnardo's crèche in Trowbridge, and a children's holiday club at Grassacres Hall. Earlier this month, Miss Scudamore was presented with a High Sheriff's Award from the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, an award given in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. She lives in Westbury and has a seven-year-old daughter.

What do you like most about living in Wiltshire?

The countryside, the fields and the walks. Sadly now though, towns are expanding and eating into the countryside in places like Westbury Leigh.

Where would you recommend for a good evening out and why?

Dean's Bistro in Maristow Street, Westbury. It may be small, but it's ideal for a romantic meal, a family meal or a party. The food is great.

Who would your ideal dining partner be and why?

If I was not eating with my partner Phil, then my daughter and the Muppets might be fun. I really do love to laugh!

Which local landmark or attraction would you recommend?

I know it is in Gloucestershire rather than Wiltshire but I love going to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. There are loads and loads of birds, you can feed them out of your hand and it's nice for the children. I also used to like the Rode Bird Gardens but that is sadly now gone.

What is your favourite book and why?

Remember Me by Lesley Pearce. It is about a young woman called Mary Broad who steals a hat and is due to be hanged, but instead she is sent to the convict colony in Botany Bay. Lesley Pearce writes exciting stories based on historical fact, and is not predictable.

What is your favourite music and why?

Christian inspirational music, such as Does Anybody Hear Her, Casting Crowns, Walking Her Home, Mark Schultz and all of the songs Matt Redman sings. I have a friend who wants to launch a Christian radio station and I have helped with ideas. I hope he is successful with this exciting venture, it sounds fantastic.

How do you relax?

I am really looking forward to the nicer weather, having barbecues and relaxing in my garden. It is my corner of the world to escape in.

What keeps you awake at night?

I worry about a lot of things, but the main two are probably wondering if I have done a good enough job, and worrying if I can get everything done in time.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you take?

Life is not worth anything without having God, who is with me always whatever I do, my Bible and my garden, so they are the three things I would need.
