Exhibition to draw on textile heritage

This year’s textile and weaving festival will run at Trowbridge Museum between August 15 and November 14 and will feature a varied and extensive programme of events and exhibitions drawing on the town’s rich textile heritage.

The museum has opened up its object stores to the textile departments at Wiltshire College, Bath Spa University and the Young Embroidery Group, allowing students to explore and draw inspiration from their expansive collection of local objects.

The result will be an innovative exhibition of contemporary textile pieces created by the students and displayed throughout the museum for the duration of the festival.

The festival will also feature a programme of supporting events including a lecture series showcasing talks about the woollen industry by local historians, and a lecture by Sue Bradley from Bath Spa University discussing the use of museum collections as inspiration for new artworks.

In September, running in unison with Heritage Open Days, there will be live demonstrations from the Spinners Guild, historic weaving walks across the town and practical demonstrations on the museum’s dobcross loom.

There is also a varied educational programme which will feature fun; textile related workshops throughout the holidays, including a joint poetry project set up with Trowbridge Library entitled ‘Weaving with words’. For more details, call Trowbridge Museum on 01225 751339.
