Empire’s editor-in-chief Morgan Rees said: “When you look at the body of work he has given us, both on screen and behind the camera, he has achieved so much.

“I can’t think of anyone who deserves this award more. Ralph Fiennes is truly an Empire Legend.”

The 52-year-old won a Bafta for best actor for his portrayal of concentration camp commandant Amon Goeth in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, and Bafta and Oscar nominations for playing Count Laszlo de Almasy in Anthony Minghella’s drama The English Patient.

He has turned his hand to directing with Coriolanus and The Invisible Woman, in which he also starred as Charles Dickens.

James Nesbitt will return to host the Jameson Empire Awards, which take place at Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane.
