The Bradfordians’ production of The Snow Queen follows the traditional Hans Christian Anderson storyline: the evil Snow Queen kidnaps her brother Kay, so Gerda travels to the Far North to save him.

Her adventure entails encountering comedic crows, a Prince and Princess, nasty robbers and an evil flower witch, not to mention the terrifying Snow Queen.

Sarah Smart, who incredibly is still at primary school, plays a stunning Gerda with skilled diction, singing, and acting and is on stage constantly. Similarly, Kay is played brilliantly by Lewis Callaghan, alongside the hilarious family of crows with their good comic timing.

Kate Burton portrayed a convincing Snow Queen with a terrifying presence. The songs were catchy and well sung, particularly in Prince Crispin and Princess Christian’s number.

The special effects at times left me bewildered and added to the magic of the show, as did the inventive costumes: the crow’s glossy black feathers and the sprite’s icy, metallic outfits added to the spectacle, well designed by Ellen Bishop.

One of the best aspects was the young, talented group of performers, who were fabulous. There are tickets left for Friday and Saturday, available from 01225 860100, and it would be a perfect way to end the half term with the family.
