Salisbury Cathedral’s Organ Scholar is giving a piano recital on Sunday at 3pm as part of the celebrations for Cathedral Day.

Edward Reeve combines his life as Organ Scholar at the cathedral with that of concert pianist, regularly giving recitals and performing as a soloist in concertos.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear a fabulous young recitalist performing on the cathedral’s fine Blüthner piano.

His rich and varied programme opens with Busoni’s magnificent reworking for piano of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor for solo violin. This is followed by Beethoven’s epic Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major, demonstrating late Beethoven at his best in one of the finest works in the piano repertoire.

Other works include the tempestuous final movement of Prokofiev’s Sixth Piano Sonata (the first of the great War Sonatas), and the exquisite middle movement of Ravel’s Sonatine, a gorgeous French Impressionist take on the Baroque dance, the minuet.

The programme culminates with a solo piano improvisation.

Admission is free, but there will be a retiring collection for the Choral Foundation.
