Northern Harmony, the world music vocal ensemble based in Vermont, USA, visits the American Museum in Bath next week, when they are offering singers the chance to learn from them.
Their concert on Thursday, October 9 at 7.30pm will be followed on the Friday morning by a two-hour workshop session, also at the Museum.
Northern Harmony has been invited to Bath for the first time by local choir, Songways. Songways director Jane Harris said: “Their energy, sound and mastery of different world music styles are truly inspiring.
“I am delighted to welcome them to Bath, especially to the wonderful Stables performance space at the American Museum.”
The 16 brilliant singers, led by Larry Gordon, will present a mix of world harmony traditions including South African songs and dances, American shape-note singing and quartet gospel, traditional polyphony from Georgia, Corsica, and the Balkans, and renaissance motets.
Northern Harmony has won a wide reputation for their remarkable command of the different singing styles and timbres appropriate to these different traditions.
At the singing workshop the group will teach a selection of songs from these different styles. Northern Harmony singers will help support each vocal part, making the teaching particularly efficient and rewarding.
Tickets for either the concert or the workshop are £12 (£10 for museum members) and both include entry to the museum and grounds.
