THE Wyvern Theatre’s Summer Youth Project is well underway and as Hairspray’s opening night approaches, three of the cast members took a trip to Sardaya Hair & Beauty on Commercial Road to perfect their 1960s-style bouffants.

Kerrie Scarff, who plays leading lady Tracy Turnblad, Olympia Curry, who will play Motormouth Maybelle and Tino Muronda, who plays the character of Little Inez, were transformed into their swinging 1960s counterparts amid a flurry of hairspray and ribbon.

Olympia, who takes up the role of Motormouth Maybelle, played by Queen Latifah in the 2007 hit movie, is relishing the opportunity to dress up. She said: “I’m really enjoying Summer Youth Project. I love the 60s fashion and hair styles. The whole process is really bringing out the character in me and I can’t wait to share our production with an audience.”

Salon owner Ellen Osa was happy to welcome the trio to the salon. She said: “As an independent hair salon specialising in black hair, Sardaya are thrilled to support the participants of this year’s Summer Youth Project production of Hairspray. Although set in the 60s, the musical features themes and issues that are still relevant today and we’re happy to support all causes that raise awareness of equality issues.”

Around 180 aspiring young performers and technicians are working alongside a highly skilled creative team, culminating in five performances of a full-scale musical. Applications for next year’s Summer Youth Project will open after Christmas, with youngsters encouraged to come along to a performance of Hairspray for a taste of what they can expect next year.

Hairspray runs at the Wyvern Theatre from today (Thursday) until Sunday. Book tickets today at swindontheatres.co.uk or by calling the ticket office on (01793) 524481.
