Theatre of the absurd targets political correctness

PREVIEW: The Department of Smelling Pistakes,Tobacco Factory: The Brewery, Bristol.

Mining its trademark vein of absurdist humour and taking inspiration from writers such as Gogol and Bulgakov, Bristol-based Publick Transport presents this new comedy, set in a Russian governmental office where two civil servants jostle for power, one a puffed up bureaucrat in search of a job description, the other an unidentified inspector, the purpose of whose visit remains frighteningly vague.

Reluctant to commit to specific thought for fear of showing ignorance of the party line – which changes hourly – they make idle conversation out of which is extrapolated the deepest meaning, while their attempts at political correctness only result in grammatical incorrectness.

The show is written by Angus Barr (former artistic director of Ridiculusmus and regular with Gonzo Moose), directed by Phil Booth (songwriter and performer with Bloolips), and performed by Angus Barr and Toby W. Davies (Plain Clothes, High Wing).

Performance are at The Brewery from February 10 to 28 (not Monday or Tuesday) at 8.15pm.

Tickets are £9 (£7 concessions).
