Shakers,The Wharf theatre, Devizes, January 27-February 4

When Bolly was the thing to swig When Bolly was the thing to swig

CHRIS Worthy directed a very fine production of John Godber’s Bouncers at the Wharf Theatre a few years ago, so his new show, Shakers, written by Mr Godber with Jane Thornton, is highly anticipated.

Shakers cocktail bar is the place to be after work to meet your mates before going on to a club, pick up girls or to celebrate or drown your sorrows.

The four young waitresses reveal the lives of the staff and customers and offer an insight into their hopes, dreams and disappointments.

Shakers was written in 1987, at the height of the Thatcherite yuppie revolution, where every town in the UK had its cocktail bar. The play gives the audience a wickedly funny glimpse into this world, now part of social history. Rushed off their feet, underpaid and overworked, the four long-suffering waitresses try to smile and help the difficult customers while coping with their own personal problems.

It is a fascinating and often hilarious view of the reality which lurks behind the plastic palms and pina coladas.

Shakers is on from Friday, January 27 to Saturday, February 4 at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale at Devizes Books on (01380) 725944.
