IF Monday was supposed to be the start of the most depressing week of the year, Bristol Hippodrome have the perfect antidote in Lord of the Dance, the Michael Flatley-created musical extravaganza which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
It doesn’t matter if you like Irish dancing or not, you can’t fail to be stirred by the toe-tapping rhythms and the glamour of the spectacle.
This is Show Dancing at its very best, complete with a wild musical score and some very loud pyrotechnics as the Lord of the Dance battles the Dark Lord Don Dorcha and his futuristic space-cop cohorts, winning the love of the fair maiden and using the Little Spirit’s power to win the final dance duel.
The dancers pull out all the stops, and you can do nothing but admire their power and grace and some amazing sets of abs – and that’s just the girls.
David McCabe played the Lord on Monday, and isn’t he just a hell of a fellow! He brought the audience to its feet as he milked the final applause for all it was worth, and it was well worth it. Go and see this if you need a cheer up to start 2012.
