John Sansome's exhibition is a retrospective of 50 years in photography (34495-1)

THE third Cloth Road Arts Week takes place next month, celebrating the work of local artists.

In the weeks running up to the event, beginning May 3, we are featuring some those who taking part. This week we meet photographer John Sansome. Visit www.clothroadartists.com

WHEN John Sansome picked up his family's box camera as a child he had no idea that it would spark a lifetime's passion.

Originally from the east midlands and now living in Trowbridge, Mr Sansome has spent most of his life taking pictures and selling photographic equipment for a living.

He is one of the artists taking part in the 2008 Cloth Road Arts Week and will be exhibiting some of his work in a studio in Bradford Road.

The exhibition is a retrospective study of 50 years of his work as a professional photographer.

Mr Sansome made his living from wedding photography and has also taken pictures of a range of muses including famous cellist Bruno Schrecker. Images of the musician playing in Bath will appear in the exhibition.

In his mid-sixties and a father-of-two, Mr Sansome held evening classes at Wiltshire College for many years where he was able to pass his enthusiasm and knowledge of photographic techniques and methods to students.

He said: "I think some of my favourite work was taken on the island of Malta. It is such an old-fashioned place and has so much character. The weather's good too."

Mr Sansome is also a member of the Friends of Trowbridge in Bloom and has been taking pictures of the winning horticultural displays for many years.

An advocate of digital technology, Mr Sansome nevertheless believes the advent of the technology is threatening the records of the future.

He said: "Keeping pictures on computers is a big problem. In the future there will be no boxes of family photos to discover in attics because fewer and fewer pictures are developed. It's an interesting change."

For more information call Mr Sansome on (01225) 763569 or email john.sansome1@tesco.net
