I WRITE to respond to a recent letter where a member of the public had seen a rough sleeper in a tent in the Westbury area. We are extremely concerned about this matter and rough sleepers across the county are a top priority for Wiltshire Council.
An example is last week during the extreme cold weather we triggered the provision of emergency accommodation to anyone sleeping rough to help them get off the streets.
There is a strong network of organisations and workers who work together to help those who are vulnerable and often have complex needs and sleep rough across the county.
We are trying to trace the individual located in Westbury and would encourage members of the public who see a rough sleeper to contact the housing options team at Wiltshire Council.
The council has recently invested in two outreach workers who are dedicated to working with rough sleepers to provide advice and support to help them move into settled accommodation as quickly as possible.
It may interest readers that we have recently carried out a rough sleepers count across Wiltshire and our intelligence from the agencies and partners that we work with did not identify a rough sleeper in the Westbury area.
I would like to assure your readers that we are fully committed to working to end rough sleeping, which is not an acceptable option in today’s modern society, and we will respond and act swiftly to any reports that we receive regarding anyone sleeping rough.
