I WOULD take issue with Mr. Baraud over his comments regarding the renovation of Buckingham Palace. This is undoubtedly one of the most cherished heritages of our land, and it must be preserved, no matter what the cost. This iconic building has been the centre of so many national events, in peace and war and it would be terrible to see it fall into disrepair.
Our Queen, along with other senior members of the Royal Family, carry out so many duties at home and abroad for our country, and no cost of renovation can be equal to the prestige and financial benefits this must bring. Added to which of course, such buildings not only in London but over the land bring thousands of tourists from across the world to our shores.
It is easy to say that this money could have been put to a better purpose, such as the Welfare State, but with the way national government funds are allocated this would have been extremely unlikely.
We have a beloved monarch and the concern nationally following her recent illness undoubted proves this. It is also easy to forget that except for the first ten years of her life she has been in the public eye, either as heir to the throne or Queen. and deserves nothing but the best.
