WITH reference to recent letters (Wiltshire Times, January 20 and article January 13) regarding my accident in St Thomas’ Road.
I remember when I was young, that Trowbridge Urban District Council used to employ street sweepers who cleaned the streets daily picking up litter, leaves etc and in the winter would grit the pavements.
Since then we have had West Wiltshire District Council which had the responsibility for cleaning pavements and streets in their area. Wiltshire County Council always had responsibility for highways.
Since the empire of Baroness Scott took over the whole county as Wiltshire Council, something I and many more had no vote on, or agreement with, the situation has got worse.
Combine this with cuts imposed by Tory Government, services have suffered yet more decline.
I believe that the Thatcherite drive for more and more privatisation of every council service, utility and social care, has led to the dire state of the NHS, railways etc. We are all having to pay for profits instead of services.
Let’s get back to a mixed economy, where the NHS, councils, utilities, transport and social care are run publicly for service and not for profit.
We would all benefit I feel.
