RE: THE letter in last week’s Wiltshire Times from Phoebe Kemp. Is she not aware of the amount of housing that has been built in Trowbridge in recent years?
The old council office site in Bradley Road is already going to be housing, I believe. The Ushers Brewery: Jobs gone and houses in place. The Ushers bottling store: Jobs gone, houses in place. The old bus station: Gone and houses in place with the buses now in the centre of town causing pollution with their engines running and leaving oily deposits on the road. I feel that these should be re-sited at the railway station but still be able to pick up at the town hall.
What Trowbridge needs are more jobs for people to be able to earn money to afford to live in these buildings. The Bowyers site had a developer ready to transform it with £46m ready to go but the council pushed forward the St Stephens place development ahead of this and the developer for the Bowyers site lost faith and sold it. Now it stands empty and an eyesore.
What is needed there are decent leisure facilities that are worthy of the county town of Wiltshire Over recent years Trowbridge has been allowed to deteriorate into a poor state from what I grew up with and was proud to say I lived there, ie ten pin bowling, indoor bowls facility, a decent swimming pool with proper access for disabled people, instead of the indignity of being hoisted in and out manually.
All of these need to have proper refreshment outlets and we do need another filling station with a food outlet. All of these facilities would have easy access with people being able to commute from other areas by bus and train which is not the case with other facilities on offer in this area.
