MAY I draw your readers’ attention to a decision that the Trowbridge Town Council has made, reference to this year’s Remembrance Sunday parade.
The town council has decided to turn the Remembrance Day parade into a Freedom celebration parade, by letting the 32 Battery Royal Artillery, who were given this honour three years ago, to lead the parade which turns it into a freedom parade not a Remembrance parade.
Remembrance Day parade, which is always the nearest Sunday to November 11, is to remember the fallen of the First World War and all subsequent conflicts since, that is why the Standards of the Royal British Legion and Regimental Associations’ Standards, which represent the fallen of all conflicts and veterans, take the lead in the parade and the regular troops fall in behind in honour of the fallen.
I feel that the town council is making a big error with this decision as Remembrance day is sacrosanct to the townspeople of Trowbridge and surrounding area. If the town council want to give a freedom parade then it should be in June at Armed Forces Day not November.
