Drink driver's ambulance crash

AN uninsured driver who smashed into the back of an ambulance while almost five times the drink drive limit has walked free from court.

Maciej Parzych, 31, of Smallbrook House, Staverton, had been drinking at a party before piling into the back of the emergency vehicle which had stopped at a roundabout at lunchtime.

The ambulance, which had a patient suffering spinal injuries in the back of it, was violently shunted forward by the impact.

Parzych initially denied drink driving but was sent to jail for 150 days after changing his plead before magistrates in Chippenham.

But Judge Douglas Field, sitting with two justices at Swindon crown court, upheld the Pole's appeal and suspended the sentence.

Claire Marlow, prosecuting, told the court ambulanceman Stephen Brown was driving the vehicle on Hammond Way, Trowbridge, at 2pm on Saturday April 14 last year.

As it approached a roundabout the car in front stopped to allow a young couple to cross the road and he pulled up behind it.

She said Mr Brown looked in the mirror and saw a car approaching from behind with the wheels screeching and smoke coming from them.

Before he could do anything the car smashed into the back of the ambulance causing it to lurch forward with some force.

He then saw the driver of the car staggering along the side of the road approaching the window of the ambulance.

She said his speech was slurred and incomprehensible so he told him to wait at the side of the road as the police had already been called.

When they arrived he was found to have 171 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit is 35 micrograms.

He was also found to have no insurance and Miss Marlow said one of the tyres was also defective.

Parzych pleaded guilty to drink driving and having no insurance.

Magistrates jailed him for 150 days and banned him from the road for four years but gave him the chance to reduce it by a year if he completed a rehabilitation course.

Andrew Eddy, defending, said although his client had initially pleaded not guilty a sentence equivalent of five months was too long as the maximum is six months.

He said his client case to the UK three years ago for a better life and sends money home to his family in Poland.

Parzych, he said, worked at a dairy in Shepton Mallet and had been at a party before making the foolish decision to drive a relatively short distance home.

He urged the court to consider prison overcrowding and said it was possible to pass a robust sentence without jailing him.

"This is not a case where the public need to be protected," he told the court.

Suspending the sentence for a year the judge said Parzych would have to do 300 hours of community service and be on probation for a year. He left the ban untouched.

Yet ANOTHER example of muppet justice - this cretin was 5 times the drink-drive limit and uninsured and collided with an ambulance containing a sick patient. If the public don't need protection against morons like that then just who do they need to be protected against? The original sentence of 5 months jail was entirely justified and should have been retained - indeed why was this appeal ever allowed? And no need to enquire whether he will be deported back to Poland following this conviction is there? And I am sure he will be taking notice of his driving ban - not!

Indeed another case of muppet justice. When are the cretins in power going to start giving the public what they want - real sensible justice. They're talking about 2 years prison for using a mobile phone and this idiot gets off with a smack on the wrist.

My car was hit whilst stationary overnight on a residential cul-de-sac by a possible drunk driver who shall we say was an "economic visitor" to Trowbridge the car was found further up the road with the paint from our car on it parked at a very odd angle and unlocked,The car didn't show a Tax disc so probably was uninsured as well, the incident was reported to the Police we had to produce all our documents they did absolutely nothing, they siad they would get back to us when they had spoken to the owner of the car (we knew where he lived and told the police what number the house was what) that was at the beginning of June we heard nothing, when will the authorities take seriously the illegal driving habits of visitors to this county --- when someone is killed !!!!!

This country is a joke! and the law is and ****!

THIS IS YET ANOTHER CASE OF PUNISHMENT NOT FITTING THE CRIME, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO MONEY INVOLVED A LIGHT SENTANCE, AND YES HE SHOULD BE DEPORTED

Apparently I should get myself some Polish number plates and stick them on. Nice one Judge Douglas, more muppet law!

Douglas field again, lol. he's an amazing guy, an immigrant to this country needs to be taught we english abide by motoring laws as should they. mr fields is proving the polish have different rights to any of us. if anyone goes to court just state this case and judges name, plead guilty and see what happens!!! equal rights no. human rights dictate to us now!!! get rid!!!

I agree that he should have been punished more severely, it's just a shame to see people who seem to think he should have a harsher sentence simply for being Polish.

Deporting the guy would be about as much punishment as deporting someone to Wales. He'd be able to come straight back.

not sure which would be worse wales or poland any way if they like this country so much they should all be put in the army (as they are only here to avoid national service back home) then sent to the gulf instead of our own heros then if they do a good job and survive then when they come back they can stay if not then at least they made the effort

Can't think of a lot worse!!! SICK that's what it is... What the hell has it got to do with whether he's sending money back to his family... the defence throw in the sympathy vote and the justice system crumbles. And it's ok that he was "only driving a short distance" SICK. I have nothing against foreign visitors or settlers but they should be held to blame just like the English man! he won't learn... he'll be doing it again tomorrow! how else is he going to get the Shepton?

Look, get the hell out'a this country as fast as you can before you get locked-up for being peacefull an orderly because....someone has got to pay for plod and the tossers who pass 'justice'!

While we are on the subject of motoring laws, we are all now all too well aware that cameras can instantly pickup whether or not your tax mot or insurance are in order, based on your number plates. So, will Wiltshire traffic police be keeping an eye on all the Polish and other number plates that are driving around, and making sure that, is it within six months! they stand in the long queue at the dvla office in Bristol to start the process for getting a UK registration document, plates, mot and insurance? I dont have a problem personally with the Poles, but fair is fair. In Spain if some UK plates stay on a resident car too long they will throw the book at you, and permanently remove the car from your ownership.

Just to add my bit, the legal alchohol limit promille in blood in Poland for driving a car is zero!
Poles are a very childish nation when it comes to cars, work years to save up enough money to buy the biggest car they can't afford to run and then drive it around like a maniac and under influence. I lived 5 years in Poland and married a Pole but can honestly say after 14 years I fooking hate them and her aswell!!!
