A WILTSHIRE village was buzzing over the weekend after the launch of the annual scarecrow trail.

The theme of this year's hunt is cats and dogs and this month the village will draw in crowds in their thousands all bidding to successfully guess the names of the characters on display.

Owner of the Lacock bakery, Jean Sheard, said she had seen hundreds of people in the village over the weekend.

She said: "The scarecrows seem to get better every year, they are getting more and more sophisticated.

"I haven't been round to look at them all yet, but from what I have seen they are amazing.

"I have a small one in the shop window too, although I can't reveal who it is.

"At this time when children are on holiday and the weather is good there are always a lot of people around. The map this year is also a lot better and a lot clearer as I think in the past people have found it hard to find some of the scarecrows.

"I think it's a slightly shorter route this year too."

The baker said she had been worried, as had other villagers, about filming that will take place in the village at the same time as the trail.

She said: "We had been concerned about the Wolfman being shot at the same time, but to be honest we have not seen much of the film crews at all.

"Who knows, they might even take part. We might even see Anthony Hopkins tackling the trail at some point. Stranger things have happened.

"Hopefully the weather will stay good too as we do worry about some of the scarecrows being damaged.

"I think most of them were made using some kind of waterproof paint though anyway.

"Although I know in the past they have been slightly weathered when it rains.

"Hopefully no one would come and vandalise any of them either. People have spent so much time on them."

The trail runs until April 20 and trail sheets can be bought for £2 from the village shop and other local businesses.
