Civic Hall plans to go to tender
TOWN councillors have voted to move ahead with proposals for the redevelopment of Trowbridge Civic Hall.
A tender document to appoint a lead consultant to come up with plans will be prepared.
It is then intended to put options for the redevelopment out for public consultation. The scheme could see the civic hall, tourist information centre and town council offices all under one roof.
Cllr Peter Fuller expressed his concern that the actions might be premature, particularly in view of the impending move to a unitary council.
He said the proposed delegation of certain responsibilities to the town council could result in a requirement for more staff, thereby increasing the size of office premises required in the new scheme.

Where is the business case for the investment? This should be done only if the sums add up. Open govt must mean sharing the key costs that support the idea.

There must be a sum of monies floating somewhere that falls into the 'spend it or lose it' category.
Is this the planned use of the old tesco's site?
As all under one roof must mean larger premises close to town centre if it is to include tourist information.

I see my previous post has been removed. I shall therefore make my point again but with a little less fury:
The councils Civic Buildings Fund only has lots of money in it because a couple of years ago the town council hiked up our council tax in order to raise money to renovate the Town Hall. Many people(including a number of concillors) thought the project foolhardy and were angry at the way the tax was hiked up.
Sometime later the heritage and lottery boards refused to help fund the project and eventually it was disbanded.
At this point the council could and should have returned the money to us via a council tax reduction the following year.
Instead, they decided to keep the money and spend it on doing up the Civic Hall and then a little later they decided they would also quite like to build themselves some nice new offices at the same time.
It is my opinion that the council have no business spending this money on new offices, civic hall redevelopment or anything else - they should give it back to us.
