Ireland’s blockbuster seals victory
Action from the Under Nines final between Trowbridge Town Youth and Melksham Park (21784/3)
Action from the Under Nines final between Trowbridge Town Youth and Melksham Park (21784/3)

TOMMY Ireland scored with a blockbuster free kick to give Melksham Park a 1-0 win over Trowbridge Town Youth in the Under Nines League Cup final.

In weather more suited to cricket Trowbridge Town Youth started the final with three strong attacks which were absorbed by the Melksham Park defence.

The game then became more even with good attacking runs by George Hiscock and Nathan Trueman and excellent midfield work by Thomas Mack.

The second half was only a few minutes old when Sam Robinson was taken off with a badly sprained ankle which took a big part out of Melksham Park's attack.

Will Fish was defending with Tommy Ireland to their usual high standard and the game seemed to be heading into extra-time when with five minutes to go Trowbridge Town conceded a free kick just outside their area.

Ireland took the ball and scored the winner, earning himself the man-of-the-match award.

The game was refereed superbly by Callum Smith who, after the game, was presented with his trophy for attaining the best level 8 award for his top marks and commitment to the league throughout the season.
