Man arrested for carrying bayonet

POLICE are warning people about the dangers of carrying weapons in public after a 40-year-old man was arrested in Trowbridge for being in possession of an iron bar and a bayonet.

Shortly after 11.30am on Thursday May 8, officers were alerted to a man standing at the bus stop on Lambrok Road.

Officers approached the man, searched him and after the finding the iron bar and the bayonet arrested him on suspicion of possession of theft, fraud and possession of an offensive weapon.

It transpired that the offender had allegedly taken a watch from another man and sold it to an antique dealer without the knowledge of the victim.

The watch was later recovered from the antique dealer.

A 40-year-old man has been charged with three charges for which he was arrested, and he appeared before Chippenham Magistrates Court on Friday.

Sergeant Glenn Bremner said: "There is no place in society for anyone carrying weapons and as well as being unacceptable it is unnecessary.

"Armed officers are on patrol throughout the county 24/7 and will robustly deal with all reports of people carrying weapons."
