Corsham Centre named Team of the Week
Corsham Centre celebrate after winning the Premier Division title for the third time on Sunday (34594/2)
Corsham Centre celebrate after winning the Premier Division title for the third time on Sunday (34594/2)

THE Wiltshire Times and Chippenham News-sponsored Team of the Week award for May 11, 2008, has been awarded to Premier Division side Corsham Centre A.

The final award for the 2007/2008 season could have gone to Fourth Division Trowbridge Town Supporters' Club or Second Division Horse and Groom, who had fantastic victories over Steeple Ashton Rangers and Pig and Whistle United respectively, but both were eclipsed by Corsham Centre A.

Trowbridge Town Supporters' Club entertained Division Four champions Steeple Ashton Rangers at Bratton and upset the odds by becoming the first team to beat Nathan Holloway's side in 17 matches as they brought an end to their 16 match-winning run. Nigel Penelhum bagged a brace after Simon Hussey had opened the scoring for Kevin Williams's side.

Second Division Horse and Groom visited Melksham based Pig and Whistle United in midweek knowing that a draw would have been good enough for them to beat the drop and they went one better and collected both points with a 4-2 success that kept them in the division for another season at least.

Horse and Groom fell behind to an early goal before Tom Moore's first of the game brought them level. Richard Hunt's stunning 35 yard volley then gave the Horse and Groom the lead. Pig and Whistle squared things up before Moore put his team ahead with his second goal of the game and survival was assured when Tom Large scored his first goal for the club to seal the win at 4-2.

Corsham Centre A entertained Biddestone Social last Thursday night knowing that if Social managed a 19th straight victory then they would lose their grip on the Premier Division title which they were hoping to win for a third successive season.

Biddestone Social played their part in an entertaining encounter that could have gone either way but went the way of the Centre who took the spoils thanks to a 70th minute goal from Simon Gray.

The victory meant that only a disaster in their final match of the campaign would see the Centre miss out on another piece of silverware, and of course they duly obliged with a win over Holt that saw them add the Premier Division title to the Wiltshire Sunday Cup they won in April, and now they can add the much sought after Team of the Week award to their trophy cabinet.
