Customers in limbo after closure

MYSTERY surrounds a west Wiltshire furniture company which has closed leaving customers without their goods.

Concerns have been raised about the status of Southleigh Furniture Company in Crockerton following complaints from customers who have had trouble contacting the company.

The business is registered as active by Companies House, an information exchange service that registers the affairs of businesses.

Sean Haines is the director of Southleigh Furniture Company and also Lifestyle Furniture Company in Salisbury. A member of staff for Lifestyle confirmed that the Salisbury-based business is currently in administration. He was unable to comment on whether Southleigh was still operating.

The Wiltshire Times was unable to contact Mr Haines at the time of going to press, or the phone line is permanently engaged at Southleigh.

Denise Roberts bought a wardrobe from the Crockerton firm for £200 in February, but it is yet to be delivered.

Mrs Roberts, who lives in Shepton Mallet, said: "No one knows what's going on. We only found out by calling the garden centre next door "They said that a lot of people have been contacting them. We tried to get a wardrobe. We paid in full, which is the annoying bit. We have bought quite a lot from them in the past."

If you have any concerns or need advice on how to get your money back, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

Pay by credit card? Does that cover it on the insurance?
Posted by: Necker, Trowbridge on 9:09pm Thu 15 May 08
If this business has folded and Mr Haines has knowingly ripped off these people he should be stripped of all assets stripped down to his undies and thrown into the street with nothing to his name.
The proceeds of selling everything he owns should then be distributed to the people out of pocket.

Legalised criminals like these businessmen seem to walk away scott free keeping homes, cars and even other businesses.

Situations like this just dont happen out of the blue, he knew it was going under (if it has) but still took money knowing full well he could not honour it.

Disgusting...

Business is legalised crime. That's capitalism folks.

For pities sake, look at the banks. While times are good they suck huge profits into the pockets of a few, then as soon as their gambling turns sour, all their debt is passed back to the taxpayer as they launder their debts in exchange for Govt secured funds.

Mr Haines and the many like him (assuming he has in fact not simply been a victim of a bank pulling his credit..) are simply products of the system. Entrepreneurs when they succeed. Villains if they fail?

Totally agree though, if found guilty there should be a stronger "proceeds of crime" bill that means on conviction all gods are forfeited. If that means family members suffer, provide them social housing...

why pay for goods in full before you get them? usually it's a deposit and then settle up on delivery...more fool you Mrs Roberts from Shepton Mallet. Oh by the way do you fancy buying some double glazing or entering my online phone competition?
Posted by: Yokel, Westbury on 9:06am Fri 16 May 08
We paid £240 deposit on £1040's worth of sofas way, way back and have still not had anything despite endless chasing unanswered phones etc. On top of this we paid with our Natwest Advantage Gold Account - which was sold to us as "having all the benefits of a credit card" but it turns out it's unlikely we're covered by it - but noone on the Natwest phone line seems to know for sure - so we wrote to both Soutleigh and Natwest and it's been a month since we queried in writing and we have heard nothing from Southleigh OR Natwest so it's recorded delivery time (sent today). On top of which we've just had a gorgeous baby girl - which means we don't have £240 to throw away.

If you cant get your money back you need to consider going through the small claims court it's very easy and can all be done online

I went to the nearby garden centre the other day, and some of the furniture showroom signs have been removed or sprayed over - so ringing a number in an empty building is pointless.
Mr Haines can still be seen driving about the area in his personalised number plated Range Rover, so I'm guessing he isn't that badly off.
However, I'm suprised the shop lasted as long as it did, the likes of DFS etc can offer way more in 'interest free credit' etc which people seem to want to live on these days.
I was told by a chap who worked at this place over fifteen years ago that if you don't want rubbish furniture that's glued together instead of sewn/fixed properly then you have to pay over £1000 for it. Goodness knows what that figure would be now!
I feel for those who've lost money, as it's fairly unlikely they'll get it back, or the furniture they've paid for which'll be sat abroad somewhere or not even made yet.

Pathetic and unfeeling response(s) to be frank.
Its this mentality of investigation and action after the act as proper and due course that is so wrong.
Using the 'small claims avenue' as the solution here is ignoring this act, this act being tantamount to theft in my books.

Like I said, he sounds like a calculating, premeditating criminal and should be treated as such.
Confiscate everything he owns and sell it all, returning monies to the customers, then give him whats left, if there is any.
I'm sure there any many more silent victims, that will never have any justice.

Mr Haines has a new business up and running called S.H. Direct. It Has been running now since before Christmas and all his vans now say S.H.Direct on them. So i would say if you see a van with it written on highjack it.

I used to work for the company nearly a year ago and they were going down the pan then!! Didn't think it would keep going as long as it did. I feel sorry for all the customers and wish them all the best with their claims!!

so Necker interesting how you say my advice to go through a simple and correct legal channel ie: the small claims court is "pathetic" yet you come out with a ridiculous line of 'confiscate everything he owns'!!

I never said it was a 'solution' to bad business practice simply a way of legally claiming your money back by taking the person to a small claims court.

If you've the courage - self recovery works - lawyers hate it - police say it's OK as long as no fisticuffs.... but it works - I've done it several times.

You serve a letter on the delinquent individual / business stating that you believe that they are attempting to deliberately default on repaying funds placed with them in exchange for goods or services which were never provided and that they are "can pay won't pay".

You state that they have 7 days to make contact about refunding the disputed monies - after which time you will visit their premises and remove goods to a value in excess of the disputed amount which will disposed of at public auction - any monies realised in excess of the disputed amount plus costs will be returned and any items to which other persons have provable title will be returned.

As I understand it - you have to provably serve the letter - but all I can say is that - it works - only had one computer shop owner who went to the wire - but when I turned up to seize the goods he rapidly got out a roll of notes and gave me £20 more than the amount in dispute!

Some beefy pals help too :-)

We were one of the lucky ones!!
Having bought our last suite from this company, (probably 10 years ago), in good faith, we ordered and paid in full for a suite (£2000) – 1st visit and bunk beds (£200) – 2nd visit (have now learnt NEVER to do this ever again!!)
We gave them the expected 10/12 weeks, then rang chasing progress of order, cutting a HUGE story short … they had sold the bunk beds to someone else and had never placed order for the suite!!
I realised something was not right when we sent a written threat of a ccj - this prompted no response whatsoever (which rang alarm bells!)
I contacted the credit card co who confirmed we were automatically protected and that they could pursue direct – but that was for the suite – bunk beds were on our current a/c, we had no proctection whatsoever!! (Credit card protection is only for several months from date of payment – they were going to contact him re: non-delivery of goods after 30 days)
In the back on my mind I knew that we would be way down the bottom of a list of ‘creditors’ and would maybe never see our money again
After various visits - starting politely with paperwork evidencing all phone calls etc. – then gradually going in firmer - getting a little irate my husband went into the shop and (thankfully!) got a full refund to our payment cards!
I felt for the guy (Mark?) who had to deal with my husband – it certainly wasn’t Mr Hains who owned the company – he hid whenever he went in there!! Mr Hains had the cheek to ring and leave a message on our answerphone saying he didn’t like being called spineless (my husband refered to him as a ***** spineless weasel and more) and left his mobile no. for us to ring and discuss … as if!!!
I must admit I haven’t seen him swanning around in his posh, private numberplated black top of the range Range Rover – nor spotted him having his weekly Indian - I was so tempted to go into the Indian and smash his pompadums, introduce myself and walk out!!
He knew jolly well what he was doing, when we asked for proof of ordering suite, we were given comment that they cannot prove they ever did!!
He is no victim – he may have been very desperate – but only of his own greed!
I believe he has other businesses which he can continue with –
Like I say …. We were the lucky ones!! I have learnt several hard lessons the hard way … we as a family, certainly couldn’t afford to loose that kind of money!!
We tried to go a small local business rather than the nationals … on this occasion it didn’t pay off!!
And that was the short version!!!! He!! He!! Oh!! I could go on so much more about it, but like I said, we were one of the lucky ones!!
Sorry about any errors ... have typed this really quickly!!

i think that its disgusting that MR S HAINES can get away with starting up a new business when his other one is still in trouble and owes people monthey or the goods. he needs to sort out the business at crockerton first i would say before embarking on a nother rip off from the customers...HE a nd HIS family should bloody well be ashamed of themselves.... and i hope one day something happens to them becasue it will i believe in karma adn what goes around comes around..... and hopefully they wont like it one bit and with then know how hard working people when hey get ripped off by business's they are supposed to trust with their money and goods

My Father had £350 taken for a deposit on a bed in February. The manufacturers say they notified Southleigh they were closing their account in October due to unpaid bills. That means they took a deposit knowing they could't supply. In any language that is fraud and I am on his tail

Sean bless him, rang us to say can we please be patient as his mother (who owns the company) haha has had a stroke or something just as debilitating, may have tripped over her heels in the coffee shop.... or broken a nail fumbling with the merc key fob, anyway as i say he was most apologetic and grovelled most convincingly, so we agreed to wait another 4 months for the furniture we had paid in full for( yeah right) and he is still swaning around in his plated motor, and flashing his tan spineless slimeball that he is, just a thieving #$!* Sean eh
Posted by: gobby on 3:03pm Tue 3 Jun 08
Yes, Joan has had a stroke but that was months before he closed the store, and as far as I know, before he held the sale!!! He is a liar as he owns this and many other companies, with many different people...proof of which I have seen!!! Good luck x

Mr Haines drives about in his range rover and ferrari without a care in thw world of the grief he's caused to so many people.
As mentioned in other comments the Companies have been in financial difficulties since b4 2007. he has taken money from customers knowing full well he had no intention of suppling the goods, as his companies owed suppliers tens of thousands pounds so were not getting deliveries.
As for mr haines and staff they are still at Crockerton. they drive in and park inside the rear warehouse. As for Joan Haines she is at the salisbury lifestyle shop

Hi Epona,

He is not on this list - I do beleive that he is ex-directory (propbably for this reason!). I would wait outside either Southleigh or Lifestyles and give it to him sdirectly. S H Direct is run from the southleigh offices so maybe he will be there more often?

Sean Haines live in Shaftesbury.
His former wife, Alex Haines, a shareholder in the company lives on the Glebelands Estate in Warminster and drives a black 4 x 4.
Small claim court waste of time but if he owes you more that £750 you can make an application to wind up the company and put it into bankruptcy.
It is illegal for a director of a company to continue trading when he knows he is insolvent. Suggest report him to police/ companies house for a start.

this is the last number he was heard from on, may be worth a try 01985 846648. good luck to all, its not worth trying to follow him as he has his boys attempting to block anyone following, so wait on the road.

Mr Haines has been doing his hanky panky business for many years. I used to work for one of his supplier in Asia, and he used to pay us very late and worst, he would use his customers money to gamble with his friends. We used to have mr haines's customers calling and screaming at us because their containers were delayed, but we had not been paid at all. His customer had paid everything but instead of the money going to us, it went somewhere else.
The situation had to get worse....and it did. Mr Haines lost his customers, some of them suing him and winning the case. Mr Haines invested in a company in Malaysia to manuufacture his products, but the employees have not been paid for months.....the forwarders that Mr Haines used have blocked his containers at the port as he owes some of them 40 000 US.....
The Ferrari and the range rover are not registered under his name, so they cannot be taken away....some of the money he has is under his sons names......smart guy....
It might help, his number is 0775644141... good luck to you guys and have as much pity for him as he had for you....
