Vehicle crime up by 30%
Insp Dave Cullop
Insp Dave Cullop

POLICE chiefs have vowed to crack down on vehicle crime after latest figures show a large year-on-year rise in incidents.

Thefts from vehicles between April 2007 and last month is up by 33 per cent on the same period in 2006-07.

More than 230 incidents were reported to police but the detection rate was just eight per cent.

And thefts of vehicle is also up by nearly 24 per cent. More than 100 incidents were reported with 16 per cent being solved by detectives.

The vehicle crime statistics are a blemish on what is a positive report, which is due to be made by Inspector Dave Cullop to Trowbridge town councillors tomorrow.

Overall performance has exceeded targets with a reduction in reported crime and an increase in detections on most categories of crime.

Particular successes have been scored in cracking down on house burglaries (down by 22 per cent), fraud and forgery (down by 28 per cent) and drugs (down by 58 per cent).

Smaller reductions have also been achieved in violent crimes (down nearly seven per cent) and robberies (down three per cent).

Insp Cullop said: "Vehicle crime is a problem that requires more work. Levels of violence and burglaries will continue to be focused upon to try and achieve further reductions."

This can't be true. Our government keep telling us that crime has gone shooting down.

I fail to see that vehicle thefts are up by 30%+. It is almost impossible to nick a modern motor.

Mind you who reports crimes these days? Plod don't give a sh1t so other than needing a crime number for insurance purposes why bother? Ask Joe Bloggs if crime has risen not plod.

Just the typical, narrow minded view we have come to expect of you. Nice of you to keep up the good work !

Well Done but so wrong. You clearly haven't got a clue about our Police. How can you go round saying they don't give a sh1t, how do you know ? And don't go telling us how you have had dealings with the Police and that makes you an expert - It doesn't. Try asking a local officer if they care and they'll tell you how it really is.

Oh, and while I am on the subject, try reading the report properly. It says THEFTS FROM VEHICLES not THEFT OF... Two different things entirely and the reason for the increase ? Sat Navs and mobiles left on display in cars. I see it every day everywhere. It doesn't take long for the opportunist to grab a bargain and sat navs are easy. Bet you don't wipe the tell-tale marks off the windscreen either - you know, the three sucker marks that sat navs leave when they're removed. Another big clue, smash a window, check the glove box and BINGO !!

OK, I'll apologise for misreading, but perhaps you could explain then, exactly what miracles you expect the Police to work. Sometimes, it is obvious that there is nothing that can be done. They are not superhero's. Still nice to see you can still hurl insults - Sign of a great mind and strong ability to communicate !! If you can't find the right word, abuse the other guy !

I was just bring myself down to the level that YOU chose to 'communicate' at.

As for robberies being 'down 3%'. Total nonsense. Along with burglaries, most victims simply don't bother reporting it as they know full well how impotent plod have become and don't in any event want to drag them out of their nice comfy offices. Not that they can report it anyway. Have you tried going to Westbury station? It's long locked up but you can talk to a recording by using the telephone outside.

I don't expect plod to 'work miracles' nor am I anti-plod or expect a 100% clear up rate. I do however expect them to do the job that they are paid to do, not to simply fob a victim off with a computer generated 'crime number' so that they can put a crime in the 'solved' box.
The ONLY way that I could report a theft was via a bloody web page! I never got to speak to a plod at all let alone had the theft investigated!!!

As I said, personal experience not bias.

Disgusted you keep on about your personal experience, would you care to elaborate or is it that you were dealt with by the Police as an offender and didn't like the fact you were caught.

I very much am refering to my own experience as a victim of crime.

My sheet is clean as far as plod go. How's yours?

Now Then, Now Now then Now, boys. Let's not argue about detail. Opportunists stealing cars or contents are notoriously difficult to trace unless caught in the act.

Good poimts raised about locking away contents securely and locking up cars properly too.

It's good to hear that the force have their tails up on "vehicle crime" - but how about some publishing of the numbers for the various districts on the police web site (or even put crimes onto Google Maps as is done in some places?)

There really isn't much to prevent this these days - apart from obstructive bureaucrats wishing to massage the figures. Wiltshire Constabulary famously had a 103% crime total a few years back in a published report....

Folk are just exasperated by the present situation though - three acquaintances of mine have had their fuel tanks emptied over the last few months - none would report it - citing what they considered the low likelihood of "anything being done" and muttering something about "a waste of time"

Petty crime is rampant and I suspect that only a very small percentage finds it's way onto the records at present.
