POLICE are searching for members of the public to help with the training of student police officers.

The volunteers will be asked to interact with the students in a variety of role-play scenarios.

There will be a variety of different scenarios covered during the training such as handing in lost property or being stopped as a shoplifting suspect.

The role-play is designed to be as realistic as possible to improve the training of the student officers.

Basic training will be given to all volunteers who will then take part in the training exercises.

Feedback from volunteers will include how they feel the student officers treated them and aims to measure the impact of the officers' attitudes and behaviours on them.

PC Martyn Cole, of Wiltshire Police, said: "Being able to use volunteers to help with our training will be an invaluable contribution to the student officers.

"Additionally, it will give those who volunteer an insight into the training our officers undergo and will hopefully maintain and improve our interaction with the public.

"I look forward to meeting all those prepared to volunteer in the near future."

Training will take place at Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes where an open evening will be held in July.

Anyone over 18 years old can apply and the training will take place on five days over the year.

For more information, contact PC Cole on 0845 408 7000 or email martyn.cole@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk

Necker, Plonky...cmon! You two girls can role play till your hearts content. Plonky could be the Alsation and Nuckles could be the runner (runners are not allowed to use 'eau de hedge' though that's cheating!) No licking though Plonky, this is strictly business now. Beautiful those girls.

Whilst understandable that the force wants to stage realistic training - surely, there's no substitute for the real thing.

One would hope that the instructors would be sufficiently experienced to be able to weed out recruits whose "life skills" fall short of those required by a modern police officer....

Wasn't there an episode of "Some Mothers do Ave 'Em" where Frank Spencer joined the police or is that wishful fantasy?

Wurzel, I think you're missing the point slightly. The recruits that aren't good enough are 'weeded' out in the selection process.

The final stage of classroom training is a series of role play activities to allow the students to put their learned knowledge to the test. As I'm sure you, or anyone else that has had training will appreciate, it is very hard to a realistic scenario with someone you know... bring in a volunteer to make it realistic and then any little mistakes that are made can be ironed out.

You need to have time to turn learned theory into good practice. Better to do this on volunteers than on you or friends...

Mmmm...I didnt think it was anything to do with who is the best candidate as much as what colour or creed is the flava of that days' policies. Gotta fill those pc quotas you know.

Alex, you obviously don't know alot about Wiltshire Police force. It is seriously under represented by ethnic minorities.

At a conservative guess, I'd say less than 20 PC/PCSOs in Wiltshire aren't White. Just look at Trowbridge as an example. There is only one black PC, the rest are white Brittish.

My point is that role play is an extremely limited tactic and the circumstances where it's used are highly contrived - it's more like a parlour game. I'm aware of some "training" for law enforcement that sounded like an overblown version of "charades" - good lunch though.

Training wouldn't do anything for Frank Spencer. You need reasonable starting material and you categorically can't hope to address every scenario. The ability to be relaxed and objective in stressful situations can't be taught. The recruits need to be out on the street to observe how it's done and being observed for their reactions.

"You see an old lady being robbed of her pension, WHAT DO YOU DO, QUICK think on your feet, QUICK!!"

"Ummm... Tackle the robber and arrest them, cuff and bang them up?"

"WRONG WRONG! now we have to fill out paperwork!, First check the old lady is OK, sit her down give her a cuppa, by that time they are long gone... Get It???"

Next please....

Out of classrooms and cars, onto the streets, theres role (to) play we appreciate.

As for the 20 cops thing, I think the balance of ethnic police is representitive, we are not Leeds.

So as long as there is sufficient "representation" from the gay, black, yellow, whatever that's fine. May not be the best candidates, but we've got appropriate "representation. Well done!
