Lafarge to attend public meeting

2:30pm Thursday 3rd July 2008

By Ned Payne »

LAFARGE Cement Works has been invited to explain its recent breach of environmental safety limits at a public meeting on Monday.

Lafarge, based in Westbury, received a written warning from the Environment Agency three weeks ago as the company had recorded a dioxin result above the permitted level.

No representatives from the Environment Agency will be present at the meeting, which is due to take place at 7pm at The Laverton, Westbury.

Residents who wish to put forward concerns should arrive 10 minutes early.

Westbury town and district councillor Russell Hawker, who is due to attend the meeting, said: "There are all sorts of fears raised by residents about chemical gases in the emissions.

"Under certain circumstances I've seen the plume settle on parts of Westbury.

"Westbury residents, particularly those who live on higher ground, have real fears about the fall-out of the Lafarge chimney.

"Lots of people find their cars covered in dust from time to time.

"I think it's not as bad as it used to be. They have got some mega electro-filtering equipment which filters out a lot of the dust."
