Youngsters shine with bat and ball

SCHOOL teams from the five Wiltshire districts were at Trowbridge Cricket
Club to compete in the ASDA Kwik Cricket county finals.
A total of 280 young cricketers from 28 primary schools were brought
together to compete in both the mixed and girls' county finals.
The girls' final was a re-run of last year with Broadchalke Primary beating
St Edmund's of Calne for the second year running.
The mixed final between All Cannings of Devizes and Swindon-based Ruskin was
decided on the last ball of the game .
All Cannings required four off the last ball to tie - anything less meant a
victory for Ruskin.
The batsman hit the ball towards the boundary and both batsmen set off. The
fielder attempted a run-out but missed the stumps and the ball went for four
overthrows and All Cannings won through.
All Cannings played in the regional finals in Exmouth on Monday, but failed
to qualify for the national finals.
Steve Silk, the county development manager, said: "The day was a total
success and that was in no small part down to volunteers from St
Augustine's, Sheldon and Hardenhuish schools as well as players from
Trowbridge, Chippenham and Corsham cricket clubs who all arrived to help out
with the umpiring and scoring.
"My thanks also goes to Brian Scrine and the team at Trowbridge who allowed
such a great spectacle to go on when many other clubs may have thought about
cancelling because of the bad weather.
At a time when Trowbridge Cricket Club's second ground is being thought of
for developing a new super-surgery this was great evidence for the need for
such a facility and the Wiltshire Cricket Board hope that next year the
county finals will again be held at Trowbridge."
