Taxi drivers seek fare changes

TAXI drivers across west Wiltshire are hoping for an increase in the price of fares for journeys not booked in advance.

The price of Hackney Carriage journeys is set by West Wiltshire District Council, which has the power to set fares for all taxis in the area.

The council does not control journeys booked in advance as customers can negotiate a fee beforehand with the taxi company.

The increased price of fuel and the general rise in inflation has sparked the request from drivers, which has gone before the council's licensing committee.

Taxi companies put three potential tariff changes forward, with two options initially approved.

Increasing the cost per mile from £1.55 to £2 and lowering the starting price by 10p was one suggestion.

A second option is to lower the meter yardage, the distance travelled before the meter increases. A smaller increase in travelling costs, to £1.65 per mile, would balance out the change.

Although these changes have the backing of the taxi companies, no final decision can be made until the public have been informed of any potential changes.

Members of the public have until August 8 to express any objections to the proposed scheme, which will then be considered by the licensing committee before any changes to prices are made.

Cllr Brian Mudge, chairman of the licensing sub committee, said he doubted the changes would be met with much resistance.

"It's a realistic increase. We don't think there will be any objections," he said.

Ridiculous. When the travel lodge is open it will be cheaper to stay there for the night (rooms will be apparently available from £29) than it will be to get a taxi home to some villages from Devizes

This ball is now rolling and gathering no moss, gas, electric, petrol, water, taxes and now taxi's, all costs rising with no signs of stopping in sight.

Taxi's have been overpriced for a long time now and a hike in charges will make their prospects worse not better.

As times get harder and spending drops people stop using taxi's as they are really a 'non-essential'.
I reckon this price rise will increase their current issues not solve them.

The last time I used one it cost £13 to get from one side of trowbridge to the other.... what a rip off!!

its quite hard to not use a taxi when you live in a village and dont drive and there are a total of 5 buses from town to home... what are the other options? surely the council hould spend money on things that people would benefit from like a better bus service?!

That will be the kiss of death for Taxi firms, expensive enought now.
I would have though it would be better to lower the fares and get more customers not put them up and get less.
people will try and find entertainment nearer home, and perhaps get neighbours to share a taxi if you have to go into a town for shopping.
