US author pays a flying visit
AN American author visited a village primary school near Melksham on
Wednesday, bringing copies of his new book.
The Secret History of Giants is the new book from Ari Berk, tracing the
myths and legends of the mysterious creatures throughout history.
Mr Berk is touring the UK to promote the new book.
The visit to Shaw Primary School was arranged by Devizes bookshop the Well
Wisher.
After giving a small talk, the author held a question and answer session.
Headmaster Dave Borrie said the visit had been fantastic.
"He was very engaging with the children," he said.
The visit was popular with the pupils, although the author's appearance was
perhaps less mystical than the headmaster had wished for.
"I was hoping he would be very tall, with a large beard and big hair," he
said.
Earlier in the week, the children had been shown the book and were invited
to buy a copy.
"The book itself is very informative," Mr Borrie added.
"It appeals to boys, but lots of girls have been reading it too."
Mr Berk is a professor at Central Michigan University, and has an interest
in myths and ancient cultures. His next book will focus on the secrets of
mermaids.
