£30m development gets the all clear

A £30M SCHEME to redevelop the site of the former Ushers bottling plant in Trowbridge has been given the Government's seal of approval.

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears, has decided not to 'call in' the plans for Brewery Gate, between British Row and Church Street.

The scheme will see a Sainsbury's supermarket built along with 119 new homes, of which 30 per cent will be designated affordable, as well as shops, cafes, restaurants, a car park and a new public square, creating an estimated 350 jobs in the process.

The site has been derelict since the Ushers brewery and bottling plant closed in 2000. Mayor of Trowbridge Cllr John Knight said: "I am very enthusiastic about this plan, not just as mayor, but as a local person.

"That site, Brewery Gate, I think is one of the most important in town. Everybody who comes into Trowbridge sees it and it's so nice after all this time to see that something has been agreed."

Developer Barton Finch owns the land and was originally negotiating with supermarket competitor Waitrose. As well as Sainsbury's. But the upmarket store later signed a deal with Parkridge Developments to locate at the old Peter Black factory site in Cradle Bridge.

The Cradle Bridge scheme would also see a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, restaurants, a hotel and car parking.

The Government is currently considering whether to 'call in' those plans and a decision is expected later this month. Barton Finch had outline plans for Brewery Gate approved by West Wiltshire District Council earlier this year.

It now needs to apply for full permission and finalise any Section 106 legal agreements before work can begin on site. Meanwhile work has begun on the former Wincanton site in Bythesea Road after Midas Construction won a £12m contract from Parkridge Developments for the Shires Gateway Project.

Shires Gateway will include shops such as Next, New Look and Brantano, along with homes, offices and car parking.

Stephen Mundy, divisional manager for Midas Construction, said: "We are delighted to be working with Parkridge on this excellent development in Trowbridge.

"This is the first of two exciting schemes, providing further additional retail outlets as part of the town centre regeneration programme in Trowbridge."

Just what we need, more shops, when the Shires and Castle Place has so many empty ones... another supermarket, whoop de doooo...

Now what would have made sense to go along with the desperately needed affordable houses is a cinema and bowling alley... but of course the "Sweetners" from these companies to the "honest and trustworthy of Trowbridge" are not worth having compared to what one can blag from

The super market will soon go up, but with the credit and housing situation as it is, that site going to sit half derelict for another few years yet. Mark my words.

Its amazing, if this was Melksham it would have been thown out a long long time ago. How can this be good for anything in he curent market? Its going to generate yet more traffic around the town centre, which is fine for Trowbridge but When Asda wanted to come to Melksham along one of the busiest roads in the west (thats also a Dual carriage way) it got thrown out? One rule for Trowbridge a million hoops for Melksham, same old story.

all because planning is granted they do not have to stick a spade in the ground just yet...they have a few years, and the economy works on 10 year cycles!!!

If 30% of the housing is affordable, I take it 70% is unaffordable?

I take it you don't pay much attention to the local news or interest in the local area? Work on the Cinema and Bowling starts next month have a look at www.watersidetrowbri
dge.co.uk for more information.

Im glad this has got the go-ahead, its another bomb site that is going to be regenerated, the store is not going to be a missive one, but it still adds competition to the monopoly Tesco have, at the same time developing a deprived area into something better than what is already there.

Having worked with these developers in the past, Barton Finch start building work pretty much instantly - once detailed planning has been given.

Regeneration of Trowbridge is now well under way. Shires Gate, work started, Waterside project about to start, this development getting the go ahead and a decision will be made in the next few days regarding the old Peter Blacks site.

Thank goodness something positive is happening to these old sites.
350 new jobs sounds good for all of us, to regenerate the heart of Trowbridge and to really build on the County Town status that we all deserve. Please do not moan and groan about Trowbridge, compared with some of the run down urban areas in the UK, this is a very green and comfortable town, situated in an extremely pleasant county.

350 new jobs? Nah it can all be built by those dole scroungers on their community service. Happy days are here again...
