Policeman dies in railway tragedy

AN OFF-DUTY Wiltshire Police officer has died after being struck by a train near Chippenham.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed the identity of the victim as 38-year-old Phillip Salsbury, a PC based at the Central Roads Policing Unit in Chippenham.

PC Salsbury died at 9.15am yesterday after being hit by the 8.47am First Great Western Swindon to Weston super Mare train, close to Chippenham Railway Station.

The train was travelling at about 60mph when the driver saw PC Salsbury on the tracks and tried to brake.

British Transport Police have begun an investigation but they are not treating the death as suspicious.

I am extremely saddened to hear the news of Phil's tragic death. I joined Wiltshire Police with Phil in 1994 and we used to travel together to the police training centre in Wales, but sadly lost touch in recent years.

Phil was someone I had known since primary school in Plymouth, and we stayed close until joining different police forces as young probationers.
In the last few years work and family commitments made it difficult keeping in touch over the miles.
Phil was a bit of an eccentric but an immensly likeable and colourful guy who was fun to be around.
My thoughts go to his family and friends who will miss him dearly.
I know you are at peace now big fella and I shall always remember you mate.

Very sad news, I worked with him in the Ministry of Defence Police in Corsham and stayed in touch as he transferred to Wiltshire.
A colourful character who did things in his own way, always thinking 'outside the box'.
Thoughts and prayers with family and all in the Police Service in C Div and MDP.

Terribly sad. But "British Transport Police have begun an investigation but they are not treating the death as suspicious." One assumes that it was either an accident or a suicide. Both equally tragic, but neither "suspicious".

What a tragic thing. How sad for his family and friends. Sadness and trauma for a train driver as well. Such a shame.

I knew Phil through a member of the family and remember him as having a fantastic sence of humour. My thoughts are with all the family at this time.

I was on the train that morning. It's extremely hard to put a name and face to the tragedy, and I'm so sorry for his family's loss and my thoughts are with them all.
