THE OLYMPIC flag will be flying proudly at the front of County Hall in Trowbridge next week.

To mark the moment when the Olympic flag is handed over to the mayor of London in Beijing, Wiltshire County Council will be flying the London 2012 Olympic flag from next week.

The county council, on behalf of Team South West, is also inviting people throughout Wiltshire to make two minutes of noise at 4pm on Sunday August 24.

It is hoped the noise will be led by church bells ringing across the region and people can get involved in a variety of ways, including simultaneously playing a specially commissioned ring tone, called Jumping Through Hoops, on their mobile phones.

The ringtone can be downloaded by visiting www.ringingin.co.uk.

The county council wants all bell ringers, choirs, bike riders, town criers, ice-cream vans, and everyone else to celebrate the special moment.

Mary Douglas, Wiltshire County Council's cabinet member for culture, said: "I am delighted that churches, as a foundational part of the culture of Great Britain, have been invited to ring-in the four years of cultural and sporting celebration as we prepare to host the Olympic Games.

"And most of us have mobile phones and can join in too. We've seen what China can do - we're next. Let's make a noise!"

In Britain's major cities, big screens will beam pictures from the stadium into our city centres.

Local authorities throughout the country will raise and fly 2012 flags from civic and cultural buildings, choirs will sing, and communities are being invited to celebrate the event.

I wonder what our opening ceremony will be like?
It's got to be as good if not better than the Beijing half hearted effort surely!

Is this because of the proud sporting achievements, of Trowbridge.
A homeless football club, soon to be homeless rugby club, and a cricket club, who's pitch will become a surgery.

Nice skatepark though, perhaps that will be an olympic event by 2012

Not surprisingly, I was always one of the first picks.
But I do despair at the disappearing, not to be replaced sports facilities in West Wilts.
Compare them with those available in North Wilts. Stanley Park, Chippenham, Leafy Lane Corsham and now plans for something similar in Calne !
And what can Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon, provide ??
And they think flying a flag, shows a commitment to sport ? I really do not think so!

On the subject of dissappearing sports facilities, how's about the running track at the Christie Miller centre in Melksham - suffering from poor maintenance and neglect - still, any budding athlete can always go to Bath to train

This is not PC. Flying the flag will simply insense the parts of our population that have not done so well in China. No doubt plod will be asking that it be taken down imediately.

This is another demand from central london government, light years detached from the real issues and the nations desires, they command that the rest of Britain applaud Londons status in gaining the olymics by forcing their will on all with this token of a flag.

Don't fly the Union Jack but fly this so everyone knows and feels part of Londons success.

It's a weak gesture from a failing government that has no idea or will for patriotism or tradition.
Its all about how we look in the eyes of others not about what we see in the mirror.

When are the elections? These morons make me puke.

Colin - how can you possibly miss the fact that there are two fantastic Trowbridge/Chippenha
m league sat/sun football pitches which come complete with no changing facilities and dog sh1t everywhere, surely worth celebrating.

By the way once the ceremony is finished are we all heading to the local cinema /theatre for an evening's entertainment. 130 at the Arc, and everyone else off we go to Bath on the train. County Town in name only i'm afraid, and only because we have county hall, where the cream of our education system work from 10-12 and 2-4 for 40 years and then receive a lovely pension to spend in.....another town which has the facilities

Must have missed something, they are hardly the educated elite, surely nepotism rules. In my fathers footstep I follow, for a **** good non-contributory index linked pension, and terms and conditions those in private industry could only dream of.
And yes those two football pitches really are a model of their achievements (stallards & seymour).

I've seen him, he was in Trowbridge park late at night shambling along, hiding in the shadows, watching, waiting, but then I saw another and another... then realised it was the normal saturday night park posse.
Same effect though, I ran for my life.

keep practicing necker. you might catch up the lightning bolt. but you would have no chance in the relay, no one goes in to the park to practice running, it is too scarey.
