Church puts its faith in tradition

A SCHEME to encourage people back to church is being supported with a call for parishes in Wiltshire to re-introduce traditional services at mainstream times.

Back to Church Sunday next month, on September 28, aims to get thousands to return to the pews they once occupied.

One organisation says it provides the ideal opportunity to re-engage with those who turned away when traditional services were replaced with contemporary alternatives.

The Prayer Book Society works to promote the Book of Common Prayer, which dates from 1662 and is still seen as the bedrock of the nation's church.

It says ever since modern services started to replace the traditional ones in the 70s and 80s congregations have been in decline.

The national society welcomes the Church's drive to encourage people back and says it is much easier than many think to find a Prayer Book service.

Now the national society, which operates in each of the Church of England dioceses, is urging parish priests to hold at least one Prayer Book service on Back to Church Sunday and promote the fact to parishioners.

Prudence Dailey, the society's chairman, said: "Many churches introduced new-style services in the belief that they would increase attendance, but the statistics suggest that the opposite is true.

"We are encouraging people to search out their nearest Prayer Book service - and it's easier to find than many think."

The Prayer Book Society has a directory of churches using traditional services, which is available at www.pbs.org.uk or from local PBS branches.

The only thing that will increase people going to church or becoming active is a direct attack from another religion on christianity and our way of life in this country.
This will trigger a surge of people joining up to reinforce our churches and those ancient building blocks of this nation.

Until then Christians will dwindle, 'The other religion' will rise.

The time will come when 'The other religion' goes one step too far, only then will people look to the church for guidance and only when the church stands up to other religions rather than 'embrace' them will they have any chance of success.

If the current set of chritian thinkers do not become less tolerant and stand up for christian values rather than other religions values they are weak and pathetic and not worth anyones time, as congregation numbers show.

What does not help them as well is the acceptance of people to represent the church (at the highest levels) contrary to mainstream christian beliefs in the name of 'acceptance and tolerance'.

Until they sort themselves out and stand up against other religions and represent the people with a valid vision of chritianity they are lost in a quagmire of their own making.

Jesus would turn in his shroud if he knew what a mess they have made of it and are making of it all.

You cannot even look at a vicar nowadays without thinking 'Is he one of those gay ones?'

Maybe it's just too late...

I am a practising Catholic I do embrace others,if they are a different religion than myself has no bearing, there are bad people in all religions that will twist the words of the holy books to suit their own cause.

It is not my place to judge anyone, my believe is that it will be God who make the final judgement on them, I will not turn against a different creed by the actions of the minority, if I did I would be abandoning my own faith.

The bible teaches what you do onto the least of my brothers you do onto me.

The ones of us (religious or not) that show the hand on friendship to all are the ones to
change the world.

There is an old saying, "United we stand, divided we fall". Look at Melksham, (centre of the known world) You have (or had a few years back) Baptists, C of E, Methodists, Congregationals, Catholics, Salvation Army and others, all paying the upkeep of a church, all paying for heating and most for a preacher. Their God must be laughing his or her socks off!

I agree with Necker regarding the return to traditional religion. As Prudence Dailey, the society's chairman, said:
"Many churches introduced new-style services in the belief that they would increase attendance, but the statistics suggest that the opposite is true."

The fact is that statistics showing us how many of the changes away from our sensible traditions and values have failed to achieve the desired results. I cite:

The rise in crime,
lost respect for teahcers in schools and parents in homes together with the drop in attendance at our churches.

The object should always be paramount but unfortunately liberal 'do-gooders' seem have taken over our society.

Logic dictates:

Keep the best of the old values and ways; change only where the desired result can be achieved and change back when the new approaches have failed.

Good to see the church adopt flexible response at last!!If only government could have done that, its flagging fortunes may have been averted.
