Supermarket battle hots up

SHOPPERS in Melksham could get more choice when it comes to where they buy their food as the battle between three large supermarket chains hots up.

This week Sainsbury's announced plans to extend it's Bath Road store just as ASDA waits to hear if it will be able to move to the town.

In July plans for a new Lidl store on the former Avon site between Old and New Broughton Road were also approved by West Wiltshire District Council.

Proposals for a revamp of Sainsbury's are currently being drawn up and supermarket bosses hope they will be submitted later this year.

Sainsbury's shoppers were pleased about the news, but felt the town was becoming a supermarket haven.

Sylvia Rivers, 72, from Melksham said she has lived in the town for 52 years and shops in Sainsbury's.

She said: "I think it is good news to hear they are going to be expanding, but Melksham is full of cafes and food shops these days. All we do is eat.

"I think it would be nice if they included a café in the plans like they have in the Chippenham store.

"I suppose this is a response to the competition from the other big chains."

Arran Smith, 26, said: "It is a good idea for Sainsbury's to expand as it gives us more choice, so I am all for it.

"I think it is all down to competition. It is good from a customers point of view, but not for the look of the town."

Christian Wakelin, Sainsbury's regional development executive said the Bath Road store was in an excellent location within the town centre and offered good access to both public transport and pedestrians.

He said: "Extending the store would be a real plus for the town, while adding minimum pressure to the surrounding road network and importantly meeting the recognised retail need.

"It is early days but as the proposal develops, we look forward to sharing our plans with the town's residents and council members.

"This will help to ensure that we deliver the right infrastructure for the local community."

ASDA are currently waiting for a decision on the plans they have submitted for land off the A350 at the West of Midland Farmers Roundabout.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain said: "We have submitted a planning application and are now waiting to hear back from the committee for when it will be considered.

"We are hoping this will be in the next few months.

"We are still in discussions with councillors and other people in the area whilst we are waiting for a decision to be made."

This land off the Countrywide roundabout wouldn't be the field that floods every winter, would it?

Sainsburys to expand??? I think bulldozing the existing store would do us all a favour. This store is a disgrace ~ rotting meat in the chiller cabinets, fruit and vegetables on the shelves that are fit for the bin in addittion to the empty shelves mentioned by Daryl. I am sick and tired of pointing out such items to the staff there, even talking to the manager on occassion but nothing changes. Lidl and Asda, Melksham needs you. Bring it on !!!

Would be nice to see Sainsburys extended but PLEASE sort our the chillers so that the floor does not resemble a lake...

I work in the lidl store here in trowbridge, and im quite excited about the new store thats opening in melksham, some of our customers that come in are from melksham, and the feed back that we have had about the new store has been fantastic. i have work for the company for four yrs, and still enjoy working for them, and whats more its the customers that always make my day. so yes bring it on i say.

Those fields are a flood plain of critical importance.

asda is not being built in the field though, i thought it was to be built on the existing country wide shop and warehouse site which in turn is being moved to the part of the site where the old silos are on the bradford road

I'm sick of them all really, who wants to buy rubbish from any of them. I would still rather do my shopping in the smaller shops in the town, they serve better quaility with great service. Where does the canal regeneration come in to the plans? & are Sainsbury's planning on building in the nature reserve? I hope not!

Asda would be an asset to Melksham. We are always left on a back burner, giving Trowbridge and Chippenham better things. Who knows with Asda by the big roundabout maybe the verges and islands on the bypass would be tidied up!!

Could they explain why they remove so many? Perhaps it could be just a brief note to explain the denial of freedom of speech?

It doesn't seem to do Chippenham or Trowbridge much harm being 'supermarket towns'. It seems Asda will be welcomed by the people but can councillors get it approved? I do hope so. This will be larger than the Trowbridge store and there isn't an Asda in Chippenham. Something to visit Melksham for which cannot be found close by sounds like progress for Melksham to me.

OK, we accept that Lidl is just another Aldi and it seems everywhere has them.

I wonder if the proposed expansion of Sainsbury's will be used as an excuse to try to deny Melksham an Asda???

Now Walter, shame on you for even thinking such a thing of the WT...LOL.

This site would be so dull without Walter and his wellies telling us tales from the Jolly Ploughman!!!
