The original Village Pump Folk Club opened in an old industrial building in the yard of the Lamb Inn, Trowbridge back in 1973.
In its day it hosted some of the greatest names in folk, blues, comedy and jazz including Pig Sty Hill Light Orchestra, Tannahill Weavers, Long John Baldry, Fred Wedlock and even Stephane Grappelli.
It was the birthplace of the Trowbridge Village Pump Festival, which recently enjoyed its 35th year.
Times may have changed but the barn-like venue with its exposed rafters and old stone walls, loft gallery, small stage and collection of old musical instruments has been refurbished and is as full of character as ever.
It is the perfect setting for a relaxed and informal acoustic music club. A new weekly acoustic music club is due to open on September 24 and some of the original members will be there. All singers, musicians, poets and story-tellers as well as audience members are welcome. It is hoped it will recreate the spirit of the old Village Pump in its original home.
The first evening will be hosted by local entertainer John Alderslade who in his own inimitable fashion will introduce some of his friends including Scottish singer and songwriter Pete MacGregor, English folk singer Rosie Upton and as many others as happen to drop in.
Audiences can expect an entertaining evening with a mix of folk, blues and poetry but anything goes. It may be an opportunity to sing and play, or to tell a story or joke or two, perhaps read one of your own poems. If it is successful there will be occasional guest nights too.
The venue for The Village Pump is at the back of The Lamb Inn, Mortimer Street, Trowbridge from 8pm onwards.
Tickets cost £2 on the door. Contact John on 01225 707346 or Pete on 01225 865107 for further information.
The Village Pump is also available to rent as a performance space for rehearsals and concerts.
