STUDENTS from Warminster had to deal with poisonous snakes and sickness on their four-week conservation and community project in east Africa.

More than 20 students from Kingdown School in Woodcock Road returned from their challenging conservation and community trip to Tanzania this week.

The team of 14 girls and seven boys from years 11 to 13 was led by two teachers Bernard Garforth and Gemma Felgate.

In a joint statement, they said: "The students put in a huge effort to make this trip a success. They worked hard on all the projects and should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. They were an absolute credit to themselves and the school."

The expedition was the culmination of two years of planning and involved travelling in Northern Tanzania working on a variety of conservation and community projects.

Working in primary schools in poor communities, the students installed new floors and paving, refurbished classrooms, painted wall displays and started the construction of a new kitchen/canteen building.

The team also spent four days climbing Mount Meru - the country's second highest mountain - and two days on safari.

Probably not, but I'll bet it was cheaper than giving them houses and benefits over here
