Gangs run riot on estate

By Charley Morgan »

GANGS of children as young as 12 years old are running riot on a Trowbridge estate causing misery for residents living there.

In the latest incident on the Longfield estate, groups of up to 50 kids ripped down a row of metal railings and brick pillars outside the Longfield Community Centre.

Residents say the children regularly drink to excess, throw bottles, stones and bricks up on to the roof of the centre and even climb up there.

Over the past year £2,500 worth of damage has been caused to the centre and the town council, which owns the building, is resorting to putting rubber tiles on the roof.

Chairman of Longmeadow Tenants and Residents Association, James McDonald, who lives near the community centre, said: "On Friday night there were about 40-50 kids out there. Not just from this estate but from Studley Green and Seymour too.

"They had all been drinking, they were all very drunk to be honest, and were screaming and shouting.

"They then started verbally abusing some of the residents, smashing bottles and fighting.

"The police were called by several people and came out twice but all they did was take names and pour their drinks away both times.

"Then on Saturday night I heard an almighty crash.

"A group of kids were pushing over the brick wall and railings on the green. It's secured by brick pillars and they had knocked three of the pillars over.

"They are running riot. That's criminal damage.

"Half of them ran off when I went out there but some of them stayed back.

"All the police do is take their names, there is no pressure put on them to find out who it is. It's always the same."

Another rail and brick pillar were pulled down on Tuesday night.

Mr McDonald said although the area has two PCSOs, they cover a large area and there is no beat manager or permanent police officer assigned to the Longfield estate.

The TARA, which has been going for two years, runs several youth clubs for children on the estate including computer clubs, and football clubs, and it is trying to start up a dance club for the girls.

"We are doing as much as we can but you are left out there with no back up from the police," Mr McDonald said.

"The residents and tenants are fed up with people saying letters are being sent to these kids' parents, what we want to see is action as it is affecting not just the area but us as well."

At the Trowbridge Neighbourhood Meeting of all the TARAS in the town on Monday, the group decided to write to chief constable Brian Moore to find out why more action has not been taken.

Cllr Jeff Osborn, who was at the meeting, said: "The longer it goes on the worse it's going to get because the kids think they're untouchable."

Inspector Dave Cullop said: "The Longfield issue has been going on for months and we are dealing with children down to the age of five or six who are causing problems.

"We have a diverse community on the Longfield estate, many of them are young families so there are a lot of young people living there. We have got to get the the root of how those young people are engaged."

He said various agencies were responding to the problems, by launching parenting classes for example, and the police were increasing their visibility on the estate.

Anyone with information about the latest incidents should contact the police on 0845 408 7000.

If you cannot beat them, join them.

So the residents of Longfield have no idea who these kids are ???

I bet they do, but won't say. I hear there was an incident elsewhere in Trowbridge and when pressured to assist the Police, suddenly all the witnesses disappeared and 'no-one saw nuffin'

Anyway, it may be up to the Police to do aomething, but it is also upto the residents too ! You can't just pass the buck and then whinge when nothing gets done the way you want it.

I vote for proper parenting classes - Surely some of the blame lies there too. 'My kids have nothing to do in the evenings' - Rhubarb, get off your backside and do something with them then. I hear local shops sell things called 'Board games' !!!!

I tend to agree mr wiltshire. Parents now, just send their kids out, they have no time for them. Out of sight out of mind. Wouldn't the parents change if, oh lets say, some of the so called hard kiddywinks were to get attacked and beaten, would their parents care?? probably not. Some people on the estate may work hard for what they got but i imagine most just breed and breed for the family tax credit or more free handouts. I believe the parents should be forced to attend parenting classes as anyone caught speeding would attend an aspeeding wareness class.Just name these imbiciles and force their parents to do the course or face removal from the estate and/or council house.

i agree with the above comments about the parents needing to be given some kind of punishment as they should know and care where their kids are. but do feel that it should be said that not all parents on the longfield estate fit into this category.

i myself am a parent from the longfield estate that has 3 children 2 of which are teenagers and they wouldnt dare or want to behave in this way, they have a funny thing called respect for others which i take credit for as a good longfield parent there are some of us good ones living here too.

Whoa!! What intellectual thoughts!!

Its a non win situation. Your average reasonable citizen does not want the benefits brigade living next door, so they are put onto these estates. You then get ghettos, where "sub-prime" families breed the next generation of benefit scroungers.

What's sad is that the Riot Act was scrapped in 1973. Until then if more than twelve people who were "unlawfully, riotously, and tumultuously assembled together" failed to disperse within twenty minutes troops or police could open fire. After the Gordon riots in London kids as young as these were hung. AH, the good old days!

So you've been arrested then ??

I guess you would feel that way if you'd been on the receiving end. Any chance of you being a resident of Longfield too perhaps ??

Parenting classes???....The parents should be RESPONSIBLE for THEIR children...if they are not....jail them for a few months/foster out the kids...you would not need to repeat that many times before the message would sink in!

Good suggestion Daryl (not!) There aren't enough foster parents for those children who have been abused, abandoned, or bereaved. So where do you propose finding all these new foster parents!

Just to put you in the picture Mr Wiltshire Resident, about your comment, not only do the residents of Longfield Know, so do the police, the ASBo people at WWDC, the problem is the letters go out and the parents just take no notice, it's when there lovely little angels end up in court and they get put away, then they will be crying and saying they should have done more, that's the bit that make me angry, it's never there kids always some ellses, there has been a great respons from the public, just not the parents. Some are doing the parent classes, but it shows not even that is getting through, what we need is them to get arrested, taken to Chippenham and the parents have to go and collect them, on a Friday / Saturday night when they are out drinking, so when the parents get to the station to collect them briethalize them, then you have one big happy family locked all weekend and we will get some peace and quiet.

Spray their hands blue and their faces green with dyes lasting 4 weeks.

Or any colour that at the time is not fashionable.

That'll do it.
Mark them so everyone knows they are wasters from drop out families.

Spray the parents too if that does not work... it would soon stop.

I wonder how we managed years ago when we were all let out to play, I am only 32 now but I wasn't allowed out after dark and if I so much as picked a leaf of a neighbours plant I got an ear bashing, I have a son and do not let him out namely because it is not safe nowadays, I live in affordable housing as my wage x 3 won't give me a enough mortage but luckily I live on a mixed estate with private owners too, housing associations have a lettings policy for their houses on new build sites to stop trouble and thank god they do, our street has no teenagers hanging about at all and everyone works for a living and it feels nice to know that although you can't afford a mortage, you can still live in normal society without having to live on an estate full of trouble and people thinking you live on benefits (as I don't).

I feel sorry for anyone decent stuck on that estate.

It can only get worse, as in the next 5-10 years these children will probably have their own little tearaways.

You mean, police who actual arrest people? That would be nice, are you listening Wiltshire Police, ‘on ya bike’.

Arrest them, you might not be able to prosecute them (due to their age, etc), but you can seriously inconvenience them and their so called parents.

I'm just amazed that there hasn't been more vigilante activity on Longfield. Most residents know who these teenagers are.

not sure who ownes the houses on the longfield estate but if its a housing society with offices in Bristol or some where out of the area all they seem interesting in is collecting rent and benifit cheque,s
Housing society should have housing officer on the ground on a day to day basis

Its intresting to read all your comments...... why do u all think its always the kids from council eststes that are to blame?? and the perants are on benifits?
there are ppl who go to work have children and Why hasent anyone ASKED THE KIDS WHAT THEY WANT .If they had somewhere to go instead of closing down the sosial side of things for kids Maybe this sort of thing wont happen. whats happend to the youth clubs? Stop blaming each other and why not fight for the kids.. after all if this does not stop. and we dont do anything to help children of today.I pity the uk in 20yrs

Now a days its cool to get arrested and its cool that you have been in jail, punish them by making them do something embarrassing like a televised ballet lesson or line dancing in the middle of tescos
