THE mayor of Warminster has praised a 999 crew for helping her husband, who collapsed after suffering an allergic reaction at their home.

Cllr Veronica Burden's husband Tony had been outside gardening when he had a serious reaction and began to itch all over.

Within five minutes his face and neck began to swell, leaving him struggling for breath.

"He went spotty all over and was scratching. His lips swelled up, then his eyelids and throat," said Cllr Burden.

"The fright of it all was that it all happened so quickly. I thought he was just not going to breathe any more.

"You think to yourself, this really is it. We really didn't know what to do. He is in his 70s so I thought it might be it."

The mayor explained how Mr Burden, 73, looked like a monkey from the African jungle' with such a swollen face.

Warminster's retained fire crew were on their way back from a job in Codford helping an elderly man stuck in his home, when they got a call to attend the incident at Cllr Burden's house in Norton Bavant at about 5pm. They arrived within minutes to offer assistance.

The mayor praised their efforts and said: "I didn't know the fire brigade in Warminster were so highly trained. The skills that those guys have are tremendous.

"They all knew what they were doing. Does the community know how skilled our fire crews really are?"

Retained fire officer and CCTV rooms supervisor Steve Howell was given a particular mention for his calm advice and assistance.

Mr Burden was taken by ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital but was later released and is now at home recovering.

He has been told to stay out of the garden until the cause of the allergy has been established.

Chris Trimby, Warminster's retained fire station manager, said: "We are just happy to do what we can, when we can. We were there monitoring the situation and making sure it didn't develop into anything more serious."

Blackdog, you'll get a fire crew to your house if it burns 'done', the fire crews at Trowbridge dont do ambulance calls as far as i'm aware!

Fire crews are trained first aiders
many also are trained to use fiberlaters If it was one of your family Black Dog in need of emerancy medical attention and the fire crew were near at hand you would be grateful for thier help.

I have to agree with Alan, I would have though that even if the rest of Warminster did not know that Fireman are trained First Aiders the Mayor should have know, but at least we do not have to pay her to be mayor.

I think you are being very critical of the mayor who is doing a splendid job and, I might, add has agreed to do it for a second year - the first time this has happened since the council adopted a mayor rather than chairman. Town councillors are unpaid volunteers and take a lot of stick when in reality they have very limited powers.
The fire brigade only became the fire and rescue service quite recently. The defibrillators are a brilliant idea but most people do not know how well-trained the fire crews are.
In a rural county they are often first on the scene and have saved lives.
Of course the fire service is run by the fire authority made up of (paid) county councillors and not town councillors so it is not necessary for them to know everything about this service. Okay?
My main gripe with the town council is that it i so political 11 Toires and 1 other is hardly representative of the town I know.

I think you will find that Anne Coventry was Mayor for two years running take a close look at the pictures in the council chamber.
But then working for the council you would stick up for the Mayor
The fire bridge have been a fire and resucue service for at least a year and I am sure that has a retained fireman yourself you would have made sure the mayor knew.
I for one think the Fire services do a good job and the Mayor has done a brillant job with the boxes for the troops
Its my understanding she did another year because know other tory want to do it and thw tories would not vote in Cllr Batchlor.

Come to think of it Charlie you are correct and Mrs Coventry did serve two consecutive terms.
My apologies!
Of course she is beaten by Mrs Main who served two terms as mayor and was also chairman in silver jubilee year. Happy days.
Sadly the military say they no longer want the boxes for the troops as they clog up the transport system and stop items from loved ones getting through in time - which hurts moral.

oops! make that morale.
