Staff at Trowbridge store hope for TV advert debut

Staff at hjKnee in Trowbridge are hoping to make the final cut of a Christmas advert filmed at their store this week.

Cameras were at the firm’s electrical store in Fore Street on Tuesday morning to film footage for a Euronics advertising campaign that will hit screens next month.

Store manager Ian Vidler said: “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, it’s a real boost to get on TV and is creating a bit of a buzz. For the guys who work here it’s something completely different and it’s something of a vindication of all the hard work they’ve put in.”

The crew arrived from Cardiff early on Tuesday morning, staying until lunchtime to capture the footage they needed. Shop staff and customers were filmed, but no-one will know which shots have made the final cut until the ad debuts on TV at some point in December.

Mr Vidler said: “We’re members of Euronics who have 1,000 stores throughout the UK.

“They do a TV ad every year and we were shortlisted down to the last 12 stores.

“They interviewed us and we had a chat about Knee’s 133 years of retail, that it’s still owned by a family.

“We talked about my idea of the store and what it represents and they picked us out of the 12 finalists as one of the three to be in the ad.

“It’s going to be on in December, during Coronation Street and X Factor and things like that, it’s major advertising. We’ve been here 20 months and it’s gone from strength to strength, we’re on for double digit growth this year.”

Mr Vidler was filmed opening the store on the day, and is hoping that he doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor as he hopes to surprise his extended family.

“Although this will be in the paper my family are all on the south coast so we’re not going to tell them,” he said. “They’ll be watching X Factor or something and up I’ll pop.”

i expect they had to get on the roof so that the dump of a town centre that surrounds the shop was less visible!! Havent been in the centre for months until today, god how depressing is the town centre looking now!

went to Trowbridge for first time in many years last weekend and was shocked to see so many shops that were gone from the ones I remember when growing ip in the 90's. Far too many Chavs in the countless coffee shops and how many mobile phone shops in the Shires? Trowbridge really has nothing going for it and the building of the Odeon will do nothing to bring an end to the gloom. I was disappointed that I had to pay (over the odds) for the priveledge of seeing the shell of the town that I remember

How many 'Chavs' in a coffee shop is acceptable to you? Thankfully you don't live in Trowbridge, or else there would be one snob too many.

That's a rather desperate attempt to make a negative comment about Trowbridge. Common sense would tell you that being higher up would result in more of the town being visible than at ground level.

If coming to Trowbridge depresses you so much then why do it?

I thought I might find what I was looking for in Trowbridge thats why how wrong was I!! Trip to Bath instead now, it used to be such a nice town centre and I agree with yeold6x, it is full of coffee shops, charity shops and mobile phone shops not neccessarily full of chavs!

The physical aspect of the town centre hasn't changed much in years. As for your complaint that it is full of coffee shops, charity shops and mobile phone shops... well, they all seem to be doing a good trade, so I'm guessing it's what a lot of people, who aren't miserabalists, want.

To be fair to him... When I was in town last week I remarked to my friend how similar it was to something out of a George A Romero film. He agreed it may take a while for people to notice if the zombies did actually take over.

Almost forgot... nice one Knees, keeping going as an (largely) independent trader is hard work.

I may well be a ‘minger’, but I can have a makeover.

At least my 1 brain cell can spell & type a simple insulting sentence. You’ll still be that illiterate, obnoxious & lacking in brain cells tomorrow!

Don’t worry, we’ll give you time to look up the meanings.

p.s. Well done Knees.

Surely most of the chavs would have been in Wetherspoons ?

Im sorry i have a business in Trowbridge town centre and I have to agree with most of the above, A huge well done to Knees for their achievements but unfortunately they are a dying breed, there are far too many coffee and mobile phone shops, as well as bookmakers and charity stores, there is no real nucleus in place to address the problem either, rents are too high and out of town development should never have been awarded whilst the centre is struggling so badly, Its time the council stood up and took stock of its poor judgement in the past, New enterprise should be actively encouraged and allowing absent landlords to change use from office/commercial to residential all to easily will never aide the cause, indistrial development on canal road and white horse should also be given more opportunities, no one can spend if no one earns, Im sorry but tis a sad fact on my walk to work each morning im greeted by drunks and idiots all paid for by the working individuals waiting to get into witherspoons and the like,
If anyone from the council actually reads this and is remotely bothered then please take stock, this rott needs addressing right now, it has already set in and has made its presence all too known............ act and stop it from spreading before this lovely market town is ruined and lost for good.

Sorry if I have mistaken upstanding members of Trowbridge society for chavs. I would also like to take this opportunity to say well done to knees for maintaining their presence in the town.

I went to Trowbridge last week for the first time in a while just for a change.
I to was disappointed. I went into Knees
to look at the furniture and sofas, very nice but just to expensive. Back to the big stores, which unfortunately are a lot cheaper- the way this world is going i am afraid. Though i have used
Knees in the past, lovely friendly shop. All the best to them .

Having drunks and idiots waiting to get into Wetherspoons every morning is a non-exclusive to Trowbridge social issue completely detached from whether the town centre has anything to offer.
